Hey all, just joined up and have a question...

I'm headed to Africa for a few weeks in January. I'm a drumset drummer but would like to take some kind of percussion instrument with me.... most likely a Cajon. My problem is... how do I get it there? Are there flight cases for Cajons? Should I just buy a small one and squeeze it into my checked luggage? I will already have a carry on so I can't carry it as well.

Anyone experienced in overseas travel with musical instruments care to pass on some tips?

I traveled to Kenya and Tanzania several years ago.  The restrictions on luggage were pretty confining even back then (44 lbs per person).  I suspect they're even tighter these days.

That being said, I wouldn't use anything less than a rugged flight case for the instrument - something lockable.  Not sure what country you're heading to, but it's somewhat common for luggage and other baggage checked to Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, etc. to be opened and tampered with by baggage handlers.

Check with the airlines for rates on larger items.  Consider insurance.
