Add me to the "It Depends" camp.
The set I use most often has two toms over the bass drum, one floor tom. My practice set has one rack tom, and one to two floor toms, depending on my mood.
My small jazz set typically has one rack tom and one floor tom, but I can add another rack tom and floor tom if needed. My micro set has a 16" floor tom as a bass drum and a 12" rack tom.
I like to be able to pick and choose, so I bring any of these sets out for a gig depending on the music, the band, the venue, the load in. . . .

For years I played 2 rack toms and 1 floor, but several years ago i had an old Rogers kit given to me with 1 rack and 1 floor. I started playing the kit and realized I liked that set up. Now out of necessiaty most of the time I play- 1 10" or 12" mounted tom with a 14" floor and an 18" bass drum with 2 or 3 cymbals.

I like that config, too... its very tight and seems to work well for the type of music I normally play. Its nice to have more voices but there is just something about a 4pc kit that I love.
