Have any stories where someone gave you some negative feedback, but it was funny or not too embarrassing to share?

From last night:  I auditioned for a college jazz ensemble course.  Instructor threw out two tunes with different styles to see how we sounded.  First was a swing.  Fine.
Second was a bossa nova feel, but meant to be slightly uptempo.  He said so, counted it, we started, and he cut it right off.  Then he [sorta Smiley]barked at me with: "you gotta be Right in there, on top of the beat and not dragging it.  In Latin jazz circles, they'd Cut you if you did that just once."  His eyes jumped a little out of their sockets as he said *Cut*.   Ok boss, message received.   Smiley    I was on top of it fine for take 2.    Smiley

I'm in the ensemble - and looking forward to it.

Ok, who's got a story?

A while back, my band was working up a brand new song and I was experimenting with different patterns.  At one point, the chief songwriter stopped playing entirely and told me...  "whatever you were just playing, don't ever do that again in any of my songs!"

Her delivery kinda pissed me off, so on the next pass through I played straight 1 & 3 on the bass drum, straight 2 & 4 on the snare and quarter notes on the hi hat.  To top it off, I threw a towel over the entire surface of the snare, totally 'killing' the tone.

When we finished, she said, "I love it... keep doing that!"

Humble pie followed by lesson learned.  Whenever new song ideas come up, I start with that pattern first, then add things as needed.  Grin

I know that guy, he was our band director in the Army band. Go figure, he played trumpet before getting a commission at the "School of Music" in Norfolk. Lost his lip in the war. I figure it must have been his war, not ours.   Grin

I like it.  Smiley

She was spot-on, though.  That simple pattern served the song perfectly, towel and all.  Damned songwriters...  I hate it when they're right.   Cool
