Any Morello students here on DC?

I base my stick technique on what Joe Morello teaches in his videos. However, I believe that he left out the specific stick heights he's using. Full strokes, half-strokes and low strokes, but no specific heights. Does anyone know about this?

Of course, there's an infinite number of stick heights, but I'm pretty sure I've read that George L. Stone and Morello both used/uses 3 specific heights in their teaching. Just curious. Wink

If you are looking for specific heights ... which are complete subjective since the height (along with velocity) directly affects the volume ... it's 12-inches, 6-inches and 1-inch.

Morello didn't give specific stick heights for the very reason I mentioned, however, many students use the height I listed, but their perspective teachers may modify that. Dom Famularo uses these 3 specific stick heights, but again, it's just a template to start from ... not something that you use in every musical situation.

Accents should be (at least) twice as loud as an unaccented stroke ... and ghost strokes are but a whisper ... often played as soft as possible ... but again, depending on the musical situation.

He's an absolutely fantastic percussionist and a funny (though mostly blue humour) guy. I've known him since I was a kid. He and my father played in some percussion sections together years ago. Wow, I haven't thought of him for awhile. Truly one of the finest snare drummers I've ever witnessed.
