Deen Castronovo took over the drum chair with Journey back in 1998, right after Steve Smith returned for a short stint (1995-98).

Has anyone heard Journey live with Deen playing drums? Deen is a heavy hitter, and by that I mean he pounds the drums. I remember seeing his drumheads after one take in the recording studio. The Snare drum's batter head was so concave ... just add a little water and you've got a nice birdbath! Grin

Deen is a great player, but I've never seen him with Journey. He's in the studio with them right now, cutting a new album.

I've only seen him in a few brief video clips. Not much to go on, but I can tell he's one heck of a player. I haven't heard any of Journey's later music but I sure love all the pre-1990 stuff with Steve and Ansley manning the tubs. Do you think you can score a CD to review??? Grin

Yeah, i've seen him with them. What can I say,,,he's a monster. They opened up for STYX (well REO Speedwagon was first), and I got to see him and Todd Sucherman in the same night. Deen sang some also which I thought was cool.

Anyways, after watching those two, I felt like throwing my sticks away.

Ive seen Castronovo play with John Waite a couple of times a long time ago. Also saw him play with Bad English (Waite, Neil Schon, John Cain) a few times. Yeah, hard hitter but didnt seem overly hard. But then again it was quite awhile ago. Not Tommy Aldredge hard anyway.

I went to see them to marvel at Neil Schon. Always dug his guitar licks Cool

I think his style is pretty suitable for the 'arena rock' vibe. I do think that he pulls the throttle back a bit for the more dynamic tunes. Castronovo does have a great voice as well, check out this clip from Mother Father: http://www.youtube.com/v/9qIleW-ntj4

Holy smokes... if I was listening to that recording without video, I would have sworn that was Steve Perry. I didn't realize Deen had such a good voice. Always thought he was a monster play, though.

Brett, if you think Deen sounds a lot like Steve Perry with your eyes closed, you should hear the new singer, Arnel Pineda.

Havent seen him live Bart. Ive not liked any of the Journey material with Deen as a member. I was so spoiled by Aynsley over the years that filling his shoes was near impossible. Ive heard plenty of reports from band members that have seen the Deen Journey and its all been positive.

There's a DVD with Steve Augeri (sp?) and Deen on drums from a few years ago, I really enjoyed it and it shows quite a bit of Deen if memory serves... fantastic drummer and a hell of a singer. He didn't seem to overpower the band but again a well mixed record can do a whole lot of hiding.

Maybe the guys like a heavy hand on drums? Those tom grooves really call for one IMO.
