How is the DW quality of drums in the collector series with wraps on them?  Is there a difference in the quality of shells used to produce natural finishes vs the wraps?

Thanks much..

I'm sure you'll find people Loving DW drums.  But, if you're contemplating throwing non-trivial *extra $* on a kit, you probably want to go see and hear for yourself.

They sound very warm and punchy.  Was just wondering on how DW stands behind their products with customer service and overall total quality management.  For example are their drums shells with wraps on them just as good as the satin or gloss finish.  Shells inferior or of same quality.

What kind of post-sales customer service would you need?  I wouldn't think any... They do have excellent attention to detail with their quality... don't think there is any diff between wrap vs laquer finish in terms of sound or looks... DW and Yamaha both hold their value... to me, I think it comes down to this:  if you want them then that is your justification for making the change... do it!  Wink

When it comes to D.W. isnt there usually SOMEONE that pops in and rains on your parade? Grin. Cosmetically i totally dig the look, love those round lugs, i like the name, their finishes are classy and ive been sucked in by their advertising hype in which i thought i was ammuned to. The kits ive played and heard live have never impressed me that much. I always mess with the DW kits at JD Drum center in Omaha and just never think im missing out by not getting a kit. Ill play some Mapex budget kits that impress me more. The DW toms just never sound full enough to me. Great attack though. Maybe i need to take a set home and spend a day with them but generally kits tell me straight away that they have something special.

I have played the DW I may buy.  They sound very warm and punchy.  Was just wondering on how DW stands behind their products with customer service and overall total quality management.  For example are their drums shells with wraps on them just as good as the satin or gloss finish.  Shells inferior or of same quality.

They stand behind their products - like any reputable manufacturer will.  A close look at the fit and finish of their hardware and drums, and their attention to detail will show that their 'overall total quality management' must be working well.  They produce high-quality, dependable, durable products.  I've had my DW set since 1993.  It's been out on hundreds of gigs and I've never had a problem.

I haven't had to complain about a thing with both my DW set or the DW 9000 pedal I have. The set looks great, and sounds even better after putting different heads on them. I didn't like the sound of the heads that came with the set. But the set has a sound of its own. Good drums in my opinion. I happen to have met the guy who runs the DW factory. He takes his job very seriously and makes sure they stand behind their drums. We had a pretty intensive talk about drums. His son raced motocross with my grandson at a national championship. DW was a sponsor of the event. I'm sure the promoter was angry with us both. After all, a sponsor was talking with his checkered flag man while races were being run.  Grin
That's my DW set in the VIP Gallery, under "In Action". Wink I bought them just shortly after having my talk with him. I didn't even hesitate to buy that set after having that discussion. I knew they stood behind their products from that talk.

The oaks have good tone but the DW had better projection and more bottom end.   The DW sounded louder to me with my back to both kits. The Oaks sound good just not as good as DW.  Perhaps it's that the Yamaha Oaks sound almost too controlled.  The DW has more sustain and the oaks had good attack and quick decay.
Over all I think the DW's, are quality and sound outstanding to me.

Dang, those Oak Customs didn't last long.  Did you stumble across a good deal on the DWs?

I am keeping the DW kit, going to finalize the Dael on Mon or Tuesday.  I put some cash on them so they would take them off of the floor and in some cases.

That will give you time to come up with a good story to tell your wife!   Grin

I put my Yamaha oak toms side by side against the DW kit.  I closed my eyes and had a friend hit the drums and I could tell a difference in the two kits.

You did a very clever thing.
In my opinion, there is little difference between two high-end kits (the Yammy's and DW).
The only difference should be one of personal preference, which you discovered by blind testing both sets.
Both Yamaha and DW make high quality drums. One is not better than the other IMO, but you might prefer one over the other.

I really like my DW set. But each set I've got I like in different ways. When I need something special that's when I use them. Like you said, the're louder. I can attest to what Cris is saying about high end kits. There is very little difference, but when you put them side by side you'll notice it. I'm curious to see if you stick with the same heads. Let us know what you think of them. Congrats on the new drums. You were smart to get cases with them. But you didn't say what color they are. Just curious, I know they'll sound good. Smiley
