I like the way he breaks down that intimidating time signature into a melody that you can remember, and sing along to.  That makes it a little bit easier to follow the groove when he performs the song.

Enjoy!

I used to use this technique a lot in my first band. I was playing with musicians far above my level, and I often had to play in odd time signatures, but being ill-educated and ill-disciplined I wasn't able to count and play (even in 4/4).

I still often do it, feels more natural to play to the melody than to be counting an unusual time signature, it's as if it returns your focus to the piece at hand.

By the way, what snare was that? It sounded great. It looked very small, as did the hats.

I'm not sure which snare he's using, but it looks like a 13" to me.  The hats look about 13" too.

You can see him play this tune in a Frankfurt clinic in a video on his Drummerworld page.

And for UK DC-ers, Gavin will be at Drummer Live this year.

Gavin is without a doubt my biggest inspiration at the moment. He is like a tasty machine... you can smell the groove on him and he still blows me away with his technical ability without it sounding too flashy, just nice and tasy! His work with porcupine tree is awesome. Every note that he plays is musical and tasteful.. can't get enough!!! Cheesy
