Anyone going to the Chicago Drum Show this year? I'm hoping to go this year and do some reporting for the Drummer Cafe. If it works out, and I can get permission, I'm going to be able to provide some video and pictures here at the Drummer Cafe as the day unfolds.

Regarding the clinics, what is the difference between a clinic and a master class? and why on different days?
- In a clinic, the artist/educator does his/her thing with no audience interaction.
- In a master class, the artist/educator interacts with the audience and typically has individuals come forward to have their playing critiqued and commented on. It's like a group lesson with hands on.
It's not uncommon for the clinician/artist to totally ignore the labels and/or schedule, which can be frustrating or a real bonus. If you were expecting a master class and the artist just plays and talks, then that is a clinic ... and you get no personal help or critique. The opposite can be true as well if you were expecting a clinic but got a master class. Most people would probably prefer a more intimate instructional situation with the artist over just sitting in the crowd. Clinics can still have interaction, but the master class was originally created as a personal lesson with a number of individuals in front of a group of people.

Do tickets have to be paid in advance for entry? What about for the Master classes? It's $25 and they only allow 20 or 25 people in the class. Do these fill up quick?

I would suggest that you contact Rob Cook directly at Rebeats. You'll get the correct answer straight from the horse's mouth. www.chicagodrumshow.com

Ah ... now I know who you are Glenn; you are an acquaintance of Josh Moscov who told me about you. Welcome to the Drummer Cafe! I got my media pass from Rob, so I'm good to go! Bobhead, I believe that you can purchase tickets at the door. Masterclasses have limited space, so that would probably have to be purchased in advance. If there is room in a masterclass, you may be able to purchase a ticket then. For example, as of right now, Billy Ward only has 8 people signed up for his class.

I need to make a correction ...
In the case of Billy Ward's masterclass ... they are ONLY allowing 8 individuals ... and there was already 4 people signed up as of last week.
If you are going to attend a masterclass, you need to get it on it!
Be sure to look for me at the show ... I'll have a Drummer Cafe T-shirt on (of course) and will be conducting interviews and such on both Saturday & Sunday.

Hey folks - because of the limitations of only 8 students per class. i am performing TWO masterclasses. (yes, I will be tired.. ) These will be teaching classes - not "look what I can do". They may already be sold out, but I wanted to give you the heads up. Both classes are on Saturday morning. Email Rob Cook at Rebeats if you are interested. My clinic at Chicago is sandwiched between two esteemed jazz players, Matt Wilson and Cindy Blackman, so I'm going to perform mostly pop stuff. I'm the tuna salad in the sandwich! Also, Bart - MAn!!!! I love your Cafe TV. The cymbal piece was lovely. You are incredible.

I know you have to sign up for the masterclasses, do you have to do the same for the clinics or are they open to anyone who wanders by? I'm excited about the show, its my first!

If any Drummer Cafe members are going to be at the show tomorrow and Sunday ... let me know by posting here. I'd love to connect with some of you if possible.
I'm in Milwaukee right now but will be at the show both days. I'll be covering for the show for DCTV and the Drummer Cafe.

Here's a slide show (photos from today) which I'll be updating later today and tomorrow. I've got video from the Bob Moses and Carmine Appice clinics, plus an interview with Bermuda. I'll be doing more interviews tomorrow and hope to video the Cindy Blackman clinic. I missed Billy Ward but hope to see him tomorrow as well. Should have some good interviews with a number of drum-makers and manufactures; quite a few agreed to allow me to interview them.

I didn't get to spend as much time there as I would have liked. I did however get to see Bart, meet Bermuda and Dave Heim....What a great group of guys and a great representation of the class of our DC family.
I'm really proud to be associated with the Drummer Cafe!

Here's a link to a slideshow from the drum show. (I could get it to show up here.) If was a great time going to the show for the first time. It was also great to meet Bart and Dave Heim. I went by the MaxHead booth but missed Hannah. The master class with Billy Ward was very beneficial, he was very helpful to everyone there, I believe. Bob Moses and Carmine Appice had good clinics as well. I wish I could've been there today to see the other clinics. http://good-times.webshots.com/slideshow/563472448RZocVgThanks for putting me in your slideshow Bart, and after further reinforcemnt from you and Dave, I've changed my moniker from Bobhead to Jim R.

Had a great time at the Chicago Show on Saturday. Hung with Bart and Bermuda and Jim R for a while. Chatted with Hannah and her dad a bit. Spent some time catching up and reminiscing with Bill Ludwig III (B3), and some of the other guys from Ludwig. Had a few nice conversations with Mike Dorfman, Chris, and JT from Trick Drums. Did quite a bit of trick-or-treating at the vendor booths. Caught a couple of good clinics (Bob Moses and Carmine). And came away very tired by the time they closed up at 5pm.
I had a gig Saturday night and Bart came out and caught the show. And for those of you who wonder how he keeps the Cafe so fresh and up to date. . . his laptop computer was ever-present and humming every spare minute - head bobbing in time to the music while working the site.
Oh, and I finally picked up an early 70's 5x14 no-tint Vistalite snare. I'd been trolling all the usual places for about a year and hadn't found one I liked. I got into the show about 2 hours early on a VIP pass and found the drum within an hour while the exhibitors were setting up.

Another great day at the Chicago Drum Show. I've got video footage from Billy Ward and Cindy Blackman clinics. Video interviews with Bill Ludwig III (B3), Curt Waltrip (Joyful Noise Drum Company), Steve Westphal (Vaughncraft Percussion), Ron Fink, and many, many others! I've added some additional photos from today to the current slideshow. Video footage (interviews and clinics) coming soon once I have some time (?) to edit. I unfortunately didn't win anything from the raffle; really wanted one of those Joyful Noise Snare Drums! Steve Westphal of Vaughncraft Percussion gave me a VERY nice gift ... a Vaughncraft Tambourine! More on that later; I'll be reviewing it. Both Billy Ward and Cindy Blackman played the tail-ends off today! I'll be sharing footage from their clinics on DCTV very soon!
