Anyone going to the Chicago Drum Show this year?

I'm hoping to go this year and do some reporting for the Drummer Cafe. If it works out, and I can get permission, I'm going to be able to provide some video and pictures here at the Drummer Cafe as the day unfolds.

Regarding the clinics, what is the difference between a clinic and a master class? and why on different days?

Regarding the clinics, what is the difference between a clinic and a master class? and why on different days?

  • In a clinic, the artist/educator does his/her thing with no audience interaction.
  • In a master class, the artist/educator interacts with the audience and typically has individuals come forward to have their playing critiqued and commented on. It's like a group lesson with hands on.

It's not uncommon for the clinician/artist to totally ignore the labels and/or schedule, which can be frustrating or a real bonus. If you were expecting a master class and the artist just plays and talks, then that is a clinic ... and you get no personal help or critique. The opposite can be true as well if you were expecting a clinic but got a master class. Most people would probably prefer a more intimate instructional situation with the artist over just sitting in the crowd. Clinics can still have interaction, but the master class was originally created as a personal lesson with a number of individuals in front of a group of people.

I will be attending as well. We will actually have a booth there for the 1st time and we are searching the chain for really cool vintage or custom gear to display.
Should be a great time. We should all hang and talk......oh I don't know.....DRUMS?

Glenn,

Sorry I don't recognize your name, which begs me to ask who you represent and/or what will the name be on your booth? It will help us find you!

Do tickets have to be paid in advance for entry? What about for the Master classes? It's $25 and they only allow 20 or 25 people in the class. Do these fill up quick?

I would suggest that you contact Rob Cook directly at Rebeats. You'll get the correct answer straight from the horse's mouth. www.chicagodrumshow.com

Guitar Center

Ah ... now I know who you are Glenn; you are an acquaintance of Josh Moscov who told me about you.

Welcome to the Drummer Cafe!

I got my media pass from Rob, so I'm good to go!

Bobhead, I believe that you can purchase tickets at the door. Masterclasses have limited space, so that would probably have to be purchased in advance. If there is room in a masterclass, you may be able to purchase a ticket then. For example, as of right now, Billy Ward only has 8 people signed up for his class.

I need to make a correction ...

In the case of Billy Ward's masterclass ... they are ONLY allowing 8 individuals ... and there was already 4 people signed up as of last week.

If you are going to attend a masterclass, you need to get it on it!

Be sure to look for me at the show ... I'll have a Drummer Cafe T-shirt on (of course) and will be conducting interviews and such on both Saturday & Sunday.

Hey folks - because of the limitations of only 8 students per class.  i am performing TWO masterclasses.  (yes, I will be tired.. Cheesy)
These will be teaching classes - not "look what I can do".
They may already be sold out, but I wanted to give you the heads up.  Both classes are on Saturday morning.  Email Rob Cook at Rebeats if you are interested.

My clinic at Chicago is sandwiched between two esteemed jazz players, Matt Wilson and Cindy Blackman, so I'm going to perform mostly pop stuff.  I'm the tuna salad in the sandwich!  Cheesy

Also, Bart - MAn!!!!  I love your Cafe TV.  The cymbal piece was lovely.  You are incredible.

You are very kind ... thanks Billy. I'm looking forward to seeing you and many others from the drumming community at the Chicago Drum Show. Why do I get the feeling there's not going to be enough hours in the day?!

I know you have to sign up for the masterclasses, do you have to do the same for the clinics or are they open to anyone who wanders by?  I'm excited about the show, its my first!
