Hey guys, In case anyone wants to tune in, I'm playing a gig tonight that I just found out will be streaming live over the internet. We're playing from 7:30-9:30 pm Central time. The link is: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/jazzlinkStream may start a little early, but the music won't...ha! New around these parts, so I hope this is within guidelines to post. Thanks guys! Chad

We can have a virtual beer together There's a joke in there somewhere about winding up with the wrong type of virtual women, but I'll be damned if I can find it.

Sounding nice Chad. That is one live room acoustically. When you get a chance tell us about your set-up. At first I thought you were using a HipGig kit, but it looks more like a Gretsch kit after I look at it for awhile; hard to see.

Guys, thanks so much! Bart, yessir, indeed..that room is crazy....bounces all over. I tried to tune everything just right before hand, but eventually just said screw it and ....well, it was what it was. Anyhow, that is my '76 Gretsch kit 12/14/18 with Gretsch COB snare. 20" old K with 8 rivets (actually 6 installed right now) for main ride, 20" Istanbul Agop Traditional Jazz ride with 6 rivets on my left, and Istanbul Agop Traditional hats (13" top and 14" bottom) They archived both sets of the show from the stream. We hadn't ever played before as a group until that night. I had played with those guys individually, but never as a group, so it's fun to do that sometimes, just call in various cats to play and read some charts down. Kinda rough, maybe, but we had some fun for sure. http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/mpV7AMffzRbPqpnL0RMDGN9qzpWf5SmDhttp://www.ustream.tv/recorded/t3ZkLjFY1t,9y7XxbIJjHQUyBKjIDFx4

Thanks for the info Chad.
One thought I had last night ... if you play that room again, especially with that bass player, tell him to bring a small amp for his upright. I had a real hard time hearing him. Keep in mind that this was streaming, so maybe it was fine in the room to which he wouldn't want to do this.

The links posted to the archive came up with an error. I think I (virtually) know Chad and he's a great musician.

Got there by going to the original site. Sound Sounded like it was recorded with a single (low quality) room mic. But this is a great innovation, being able to watch a small venue gig from anywhere in the world.

I noted the mic situation to Chad's father last night during the stream. It was stream #1 for them. Still, I think it was good quality - both video and audio - to really enjoy. I did. Maybe next time they'll take another step with external mics. Last night was my first Ustream experience. I think it's a very cool site. I wish I had built it.

Bart, thanks for fixing those links! The bassist did have an amp, but wouldn't turn up enough. I explained how the room sounds out front, which is different from how it sounds where the band it located.....but...just wasn't enough. Chris, it's a pleasure seeing you this side of the fence Thanks for listening...the whole streaming idea came about when my father, who wanted to come hear us perform decided to bring his laptop and a cheap camera and try using uStream to stream the video, just for fun. I was glad to have him in the audience, and always get a kick out of his techno-geekery. I didn't expect it to turn out as it did. I expected worse, but considering the very privative set up, it was captured at least and made for an interesting experiment for the future. Plus, it has been a pleasure to have met a few new folks because of it! The technology is there and more of us can easily set something up and broadcast our gigs. That'd be very cool to see happen more often from various members. Maybe it is already and I've been missing it!

Chad,
Does the venue have wireless Internet, or did your dad use a wireless network card with a particular phone carrier?
I can get online with my laptop and using my phone's digital modem. The bandwidth might be an issue with the phone, so maybe I just need to try it out. I can't justify the expense of paying for a wireless network card so I can go mobile, not when my phone works just fine ... for normal Internet things. I can watch Drummer Cafe TV using this type of set-up, but uploading or broadcasting will be different.

This kind of thing could be huge for people like me who live in relatively remote areas. The world is shrinking due to the affordability of air travel, but even more so now because of the initiative of some internet users. Chad, I didn't realise your father set this up. He did a great job IMO.

Hi Chad,
Thanks for stopping by here! You probably recognize my "handle". Since this is the shameless self promotion section, post a link to your CDs. I have your latest one and it's fantastic!
I don't know if Bart know's what else you "do", but you two might be able to do some brainstorming...

Bart, sorry for the delay. The venue wasn't wireless (I don't think). The laptop was actually connected straight to an ethernet connection on a nearby wall. I agree that going through a mobile wireless connection might be pretty hairy. I don't know. I know uStream has a required minimum thru-put in terms of speed, etc. So, it would have to meet those requirements in order to broadcast.
