MIXOSAURUS is a virtual drumset instrument to be used in DAW music production environments. It comes as a multichannel plugin in VST/AU/DXi/RTAS formats for Mac and PC and uses Native Instruments' Kontakt 2 technology. Shipped pre-installed on its own harddrive, it connects to your computer via Firewire800 or eSATA and is ready to roll in a minute. No lengthy installation, no free HD space required.

Other drum instruments or libraries combine a multitude of separately sampled drums and cymbals, MIXOSAURUS consists of one drumkit that was set up all together and sampled with authentic ringing, sympathetic vibrations ... creating a 122GB library.

Listen:

Has anyone worked with this or know of anyone who has? Parts of it sound appealing, like having it all on it's own harddrive. Just curious.

Know you are pushing my buttons.  Grin

I haven't heard the product, although I have a fairly active involvement in this area.
from everything i've read, Mixosaurus is about as detailed a virtual drumkit can get at the moment. It's arguably the biggest library in terms of number and size of audio files (aka samples).
Incidentally, I think the hard drive aspect is somewhat of a red herring since other products come to you on multiple DVD disc and it takes just a short time period to load the contents on to a drive of your choice.
I think there are a few criteria worth mentioning with regards to virtual drum software.
Is it buggy?
Does it sound good to you?
Is it v-drum friendly?
How much do you want to spend?
How important is variety to you?

No single virtual drum sample set will tick everyone's boxes.

As I said, I can't give you a definitive appraisal of Mixosaurus, but I'd say if you weren't crazy about the sound of this single kit, the product would be useless to you.
Of course sound is objective, and with drums it can be governed by the drums recorded, the sound of the room, the tuning and head choice, the drummer, and the taste/skill of the recording engineer.
Other, rival products, offer multiple kits, recorded in different rooms, with different drummers etc, so there is arguably a better chance you will find usable sounds on those products.
If you have to buy something somewhat sight unseen, some other products list the drums they recorded, in some highly respected studios with some world class personnel involved. Having said that, I think there is a demo version of Mixosaurus you can download and try out, or at least some pre-recorded wav files you can download and have a detailed listen to.
Other similar products would be Addictive www.xlnaudio.com, BFD2 www.fxpansion.com, Platinum (works with BFD) www.platinumsamples.com, Superior and EZdrummer (both by Toontrack, with whom I have an interest to declare) www.toontrack.com

Chris, you/we need to get Toontrack to get a little bit involved here. They could be sending me some press releases or something ... taking advantage of you being here, as well as my interest in spreading the word on products like these. (Pick a news item or product I've reported on here at the Drummer Cafe, then do a search on Google for that product or news item, and see where Drummer Cafe lands in the results.  The search engines love the Drummer Cafe; we rock! Cool Someday people are going to catch on and want to pay for some good advertising here.)

I think the harddrive coming with the product is a nice feature though. Yes, you can load the sounds fairly quickly, but you'd still have to purchase another harddrive to handle all the sample files. Since Mixosaurus comes loaded on a harddrive, the customer can assume that everything is loaded properly and is ready to go out of the box. If I were to purchase thise product, I would probably do some math and make sure I wasn't paying more than I needed to be paying for this loaded harddrive. It may be cheaper to just load the files yourself as Chris pointed ... IF that is even an option with Mixosaurus.

Yes, I think that's a reasonable point to make.
