Sorry, am I just being over zealous with this question.  What does a drum riser exactly do?

I just purchased a Gretsch Jazz kit and it came with a bass drum riser.  The guy at guitar center said it's so the bass drum pedal can reach and strike the center of the head.  That does not make sense to me, because even with out the riser on my pedal strikes the center of the head?

What is the main purpose of a bass drum riser?  And why is it mainly used with smaller kick drums?

Is it just to reduce vibration from the ground or what?

Thank you so much for all the help!

The Kick Drum Riser IS for raising SMALL Kick drums so the beater hits closer to the center of the drumhead without having to shorten the beater shaft, which affects the throw.

If your Kick drum doesn't need the riser in order for the beater to strike in the center, then you shouldn't have been sold (or purchased) the riser.

Any other benefits from the riser is an accidental bonus and not part of its original design purpose.
