So I just picked up a used snare from Craigslist; a 7x13 Tama Artwood Snare (Maple, all black nickel hardware).
So I picked this up (3 hour drive each direction) for $150 earlier this week, and just had a chance to mount it up and really wail on it at practice last night. I haven't had a chance to change heads or snares on it yet, but it came equiped with an evans ST Dry batter which needed a little damping for my liking.
Let me tell you... this is the snare I've been waiting for. It sounds HUGE! It put a silly grin on my face all night at practice. Pulled the bottom real tight and left the top a little loose and the thing projects that nice maple body like I've been hearing in my dreams for the last year.
I was playing the Pearl 3x13 steel piccalo, which is a different voice completely but a nice drum. I may at some point leave both on my set.
Anyone wanna gloat about their Tama Artwoods?

I have an older 5x12 Artwood in natural lacquer, which is a very nice drum indeed for a stupid price (£90 delivered).

I'm still trying to figure this drum out as far as tuning. What heads are you playing on it and for what sound are you getting/looking for?
Thats an amazing price!

I play a maple Tama Art 5x14 that I like very much. Great snare for the price.

Thought I'd try the Evans EC reverse dot, so I went to GC and they want $24 for the head, and they don't haggle anymore. Some stores have gone to set pricing. LAME! Gonna start shopping online a little bit more, I guess.
After slapping a peice of tape on the top head (ST Dry) I'm getting a great tone in the mix. sounds really beefy
