Heard of them, but never heard them in person.

I think their website has sound clips.

I'm always interested in equipment that is portable/light/quiet.

But, I personally couldn't see going for that type of kit because of
the rack.

What are you looking for in such a kit?  Is it for portability or some other reason?
Maybe we can suggest other possibilities as well.

I like the portability of them

I was doing a search for drum "traveler" kits when I stumbled across that

looks like you could almost fold it up and put it in the trunk of a car = but I had no idea what they might sound like

I'm fortunate enough to be playing every week as the "house band" for a local night club = hard for me to believe, but going on 8 years now ... anyway

currently I'm playing on my Roland TD-12 that I have expanded a bit

and I pack it up in the back of my full sized van right now ... I may downsize the van and it just got me thinking about some options ...

TIA

www.trapsdrums.com -they have some soundclips on the homepage

They're not resonant @ all [hence the lack of shells] but they sound decent enough... when they first came out with these I was VERY close to buying them the only 2 reasons that I didn't were: 1. The rack looked a little kinky and 2. they were only available directly from the manufacturer at a pretty steep price [which of course is not the case anymore]

I reviewed them for DRUM! magazine last year or so. And, in the past, I've owned or reviewed the Purecussion HeadSet and the Pearl Rhythm Traveler (old version).

Every year or two I get all tweaked about trying to 'shrink' my kit. Then I get over it.

The TRAPS drums sound MUCH like roto-toms. The bass drum is about 2" thick, but it has TWO heads. It produces a very decent, quite 'bebop jazz' sound. Not so much a thud. Contemporary rock/pop bd sounds are made by a sizeable cavity, dampened. It's not that. Old skool bd is two heads, a felt strip, and high tuning. The TRAPS bd is more like that... but not as good.

They're made of plastic, but it's a type of ABS plastic. I couldn't break it. I tried. The tension rods go into metal inserts. The set is very light. The small rack is okay, not fantastic, given what $ can get you in rack options today.

Once you acknowledge their limitations, they're pretty cool. And light. Within limits.

I worked many years, long ago, with regular kick n snare and 3 'no-shell' toms. Easy carry. Crappy sound. Did I mention the easy carry? Everything went into my single-headed kick. The lazy man's way to riches, $100 at a time  ;-)

hope that helps.
