Very interesting article.

Although the specifics of the "why" may not be realized until now, many school music programs in the USA typically choose students with a high GPA to be percussionists. I think this has been going on since the mid-80's. We have several school instructors here at the Drummer Cafe that may be able to add to this.

I think the research model on this particular study may be flawed, not large enough of a study group, no controls, etc. That being said, the stereotype of the "dummer" needs to go away.

Yep, when I audition students for my beginning percussion class in school, I look at grades, behavior, and ability to concentrate and take instruction. I typically recruit heavily from the Gifted and Talented classes. I am VERY selective, taking only about 10 out of the 40-60 that audition for percussion.

"For the study, Prof Ullen and Guy Madison, from Sweden's Umea University, asked 34 right-handed men aged between 19 and 49 to tap a drumstick at a variety of different intervals."

ah. so it's the left-handed drummers that are the stupid ones.

and this reader comment says it all:

Yes I was a drummer, and multitasking with four limbs can be difficult, especially one in 4/3 time and the other hand in 4/4.

maybe there's something to this 'dumb and drummer' thing after all. [I keed, I keed!]

Alright, which of you sponsored this study Wink  Is this the same group that determined 5 out of 6 Dentists prefer Crest?

Apparently the test was not on "drummers".  It simply correlated steady time to intelligence which seems obvious to me. I'm curious as to what was the purpose of the study.

More than likely there was Federal Grant money involved somewhere!   Grin

I thought left brain right brain were NOT connected. Drumming came natural to me compared to others but my grades in school were less than stellar. Im an exception to the rule I guess Grin.

Typical, someone does a study with very open ended results, and journalists go and draw whatever conclusion they think will sell the most.

This study doesn't actually show anything about drummers and intellect. Perhaps intelligence leads the brain to develop in a way that helps people have good time, not in fact that drumming creates intelligence, or anything at all really. It just says that if you have one you're likely to have the other. There's nothing to indicate why. It could be the result of some other factor all together!

Also these aren't drummers, this could apply to any musician/dancer!

Sorry it just frustrates me to no end how often journalists do this sort of thing.
