I just acquired my second dw kit. This one has an 18x20" bass drum, 10,12,14 floor. I haven't played many 20's. I have been searching around looking at views on 20's and haven't found a whole lot. Can some of you that have 20" kicks maybe give head recommendations, also if I should port the reso or not. I usually trigger live, and sometimes trigger and mic. Just wondering how to get the best out of the 20. I am thinking of trying coated ambassadors or emporers on the toms. I know what sounds good and works on the other kit. Thanks in advance! Oh boy,,,, here I go again with the all so time consuming expensive trial and error thing again with a new kit lol.

Hi Mo.
I played a DW kit with an 18x20" kick all thru the late 80s and 90's. It sounded very good except the slave pedal (for a dbl pedal setup) sounded a little wimpy cause it was so offset from the center. But really not too bad. I prefer 22's now tho' FWIW.
Most of the old guard here don't care for 20's much here. People usually go for 18's or 22's but I don't really have too much of a prob with a 20 if it works.
I ran coated ambassadors on my dw's as I did not start playing aquarians until about 1998. Subsequently, I have aquarian heads on my sonor delites which are basically the same as dw's. I run the clear studio x's/hi freqs on the toms with the superkick 3 and regulator 4" port on the kick- they sound good. You might want an SK1 with the 20" especially.
But really what works best for you!

Thanks for starting the thread. I'm traveling this weekend to go look at a used DW kit with a 20 on it. I really want these drums!

Cool, thanks! I just got them home. I do believe the bass is 16x20 not 18x 20. Only measures something like 18.5 or 18 and 3/4 hoop to hoop, so going on an estimate from edge to head edge probably is a 16" deep.

I am just not sure what will sound the best on the 20. I want it to have as much bottom as possible. I put a powersonic remo on my 22 batter, and a aquarian regulator as reso with 4" hole. Man that sounds good, NOTHING inside at all. If I need to dry it up some, I snap on that weighted pillow on front. I just wonder if that same set up with heads will work for the 20". Also not sure if I should leave no hole in the reso. Any of you 20" guys have any thoughts?

I've been looking at that remo since it appeared at the drum shop. Do you like it? I've been using the EMAD but the plastic ring always breaks off. The Powersonic seems like a similar idea and a little more robust.

I really love it! I think this is the head. Tried em all I think,,,, but never fond of the over hyped powerstroke 3, super kick and regulator was great, emad's idea is awesome, but you loose the rings, they are delicate, bulky, just not what I want to mess with. The powersonic on other hand looks about like a suped up powerjoke! Has 2 foam rings to the head, then the weighted snap on pillow. You can remove or add the pillow in three snaps, so I can at a moments notice change my sound like in between songs quick! I put it on a 18x22 DW with an aquarian regulator on front, nothing inside and is amazing. I know what may be good for ones ears, may not for the other, but I almost guarantee you will love it as I do. I think it is the best thing remo has done for a minute! Try it and let me know how you feel. Hope this helps!
