Do you believe there are any glaring omissions from the list?
What’s your prediction for 2009 – or who would you add?
I’m a little surprised that David Garibaldi and Peter Erskine haven't made the list yet.

Although the MD Hall of Fame has been around for almost 30 years, they only induct one member each year. Lots of great legends to choose from. I'm sure Erskine and Garibaldi will be added in the upcoming years. For me, a far more prestigious list would be the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame ... simply because it's not tied to a company but rather a non-profit organization. They have a broader scope, not just drumset players, and they can induct more than one per year. I'm into percussion as a whole, the entire art-form, not just one aspect ... which in this case is drumset. Maybe next year!

The MD Hall of Fame (and Reader's Poll) are essentially popularity, flavor-of-the-month, contests.

And as the readers change ... so will the potential nominees.

Understood. But looking at the list in isolation from your opinions on the sponsor or the nature of the voting (and I'm not implying your opinions are negative), are there any "hall of fame" class drumset players you feel are missing?

The MD Hall of Fame (and Reader's Poll) are essentially popularity, flavor-of-the-month, contests. No offense, Dave, but you make it sound as if MD is like "Tiger Beat" and the readers are are just picking fly-by-night drummers (i.e. "flavor of the month"). This may be the case sometimes for the "up and coming" category, but the other categories invariably include a collection of the best drummers in the business. Have you picked up the most recent issue with the 2008 results? Would you consider any drummer on the list above to be a flavor of the month? PS: I do realize that PAS is a much more esteemed institution than MD magazine!

Here’s the PAS Hall of fame list (difficult to paste in this post): http://www.pas.org/About/HOFMain.cfmIt was interesting to use that list to find drummers that are conspicuously absent (so far) from the MD list. Here are three that jumped out at me. Jo Jones Jim Chapin Mel Lewis

Yep. I've been a subscriber for 20 years. Would you consider any drummer on the list above to be a flavor of the month? Yep. Portnoy and Peart. Maybe Copeland. YMMV I agree that Garabaldi and Erskine are due.

Those guys are popular with you, but not with me. The PAS Hall of Famers are there because of their lifetime achievements. They were pioneers in some way. They made a difference. Whereas - in my humble opinion - many of those listed in MD's Hall of Fame and Reader's Poll are there - again, in my humble opinion - because they sold a lot of albums. Peace.

See? Those guys are popular with you, but not with me. Totally understand. I'm just angry and confused because neither PAS nor MD has added me to their HOFs.

Just last month my name was on the cover of "Modern Drummer", "Traps", "Drum!", and "Not So Modern Drummer" Magazines! (ok, it was on those little labels in the corner - but that's a start!)

What's YMMV? The PAS is impressive, I will need to reach more of the bios on there, since I don't recongnize many names, What also stands out on their list is Ringo. I have to believe that falls into the popular vote more than making a difference. May be similar arguement with Peart. Below are the criteria for PAS. I think that Eminence may be the one that separates the popular from the influential. Criteria for Election to the PAS Hall of Fame All nominees will be judged according to the following criteria: Contribution: Has the nominee made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of percussion? Eminence: Have achievements in performance, education, research, scholarship, administration, composition or the industry distinguished the nominee from his or her contemporaries? Influence: Has the nominee’s influence been of major significance to the profession even though contributions may have been confined largely to a single area of interest. Permanence: Is it probable that the nominee’s accomplishments will continue to be valued by percussion professionals of the future?

I have to believe that falls into the popular vote more than making a difference. I don't know lots of musical "Influence" there. The recorded works of the Beatles and Ringo's role in them is really quite amazing and will continue to be dissected and analyzed for many, many years to come. May be similar arguement with Peart. I'm confused - are you referring to the PAS list as I don't see Neil Peart's name on it? Below are the criteria for PAS. I think that Eminence may be the one that separates the popular from the influential.

A name not mentioned that I wouldn't mind seeing on both lists would be Hal Blaine's. David

I was just thinking in Hal Blaine - can't believe he's not on the lists It's really the only name I could think of, at the moment.

Looking over the PAS list, I don't remember the last time I felt so humble. One name that I'm surprised is absent is Evelyn Glennie. Perhaps she needs a few more years under her belt... At any rate, I'm sure she'll be on there soon.

Evelyn Glennie and Roy Burns are both being inducted into the PAS Hall of Fame this year. I reported on this about a month ago here at the Drummer Cafe. http://www.drummercafe.com/content/view/211/9/

Perhaps I should pay more attention... Looking back over the list, I'm now surprised that she made the list so early, considering how late Steve Gadd and Leigh Howard Stevens were added. (2005 and 2006, respectively).
