LOS ANGELES - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71. Carlin, who had a history of heart and drug-dependency problems, died at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25322638/>1=43001Although he wasn't a drummer, he was still a great entertainer, as well as hilarious in many ways, imo. RIP, George. Regards, drumz1

I told my wife that a husband is like a fine wine; he gets better with age. The next day, she locked me in the cellar.

I just heard about his death on another forum. While I didn't always agree with some of his stances, he was definitely an "outside-the-box" comedian and his passing will leave a big void in the comedy community.

I enjoyed a lot of his comedy but I did not always agree with his choice of words. I will honestly miss seeing him perform. My heart and prayers go out to his family.

I still use 2 Carlinisms:
1) When something is lost, you have to check the refrigerator. It just might be there!
2) Flight Attendant: "OK, everybody get on the plane! GC: "(censored)-you lady! I'm getting IN the plane!"

I saw Carlin in the 80's at college. His "seven words" routine had expanded to about 100 hilarious not-ready-for-primetime words and phrases. Like others, I didn't always agree with his "politics", but I always love comedians that make me think a little differently.

i was thunderstruck when i heard the news. literally broke down in tears.
george was my man. my hero. i loved him from the time i was old enough to understand sarcasm, which was pretty young. used to check him out on flip wilson when he was still somewhat 'inside,' and enjoyed his evolution greatly. 'class clown' is still one of my most worn-out pieces of vinyl.
carlin shaped my view of the world, reinforced my love for language, encouraged me to look at the world critically. he made me proud to be a sometime cynic. the man was the consumate observer ["ever notice how when you get a loaf of bread, you finger-walk down a few slices to get to the good bread?"] and the quintessential new yorker [never mind that he abandoned us decades ago]. i loved and agreed with his politics, his appropriate [imho] use of profanity to punctuate certain statements and his constant imploring for america to wake the frick up. i loved his facial expressions, his physical comedy, his disdain for the masses, his honesty and his astute mind. yes, he grew more jaded and cynical in his latter years, but after 50 years observing, analysing and dialoguing on an increasingly dysfunctional planet and species, i can't say i blame him.
i got to see him several years back, when he did a dress rehearsal at my alma mater. it was awesome watching him develop his schtick, stumble through some phrases, read from notecards. i witnessed comedic genius firsthand. the climax of the monologue was his now-famous piece 'on marketing' shown a year or so back on hbo. it was one of his most refined linguistic feats. maybe not quite as funny as the football-vs-baseball skit, but very funny indeed. i was thrilled to have witnessed it 'in the making.'
i will miss this man deeply. he was the finest of all class clowns.
peace to you, brother.

plooker-- thanks for that. a scathing social commentary, and definitely an eg of carlin's caustic-ness in later years. [though it still cracks me up]. i much prefer the you tube of 'george carlin on language'. ehhhh--i'd post it here but still don't know how.

I've STRONGLY disagreed with most of what Carlin had to say since the first time I heard him.
But he still made me laugh as hell. Just proves to me how his art was WAY beyond whatever he was specifically talking about; it happens with great art IMHO, thankfully.
He was a great comic, sharp as a razor and I'll miss his routines.

I loved that guys work and his views. If you combined him with South Park you'd be able to construct my entire philosophy on life. I'll miss him and I'm sad I never saw him perform in person.
