It's not too late to get better!

I'm attempting to learn the SONGO.  (Wish me luck Wink ) Actually, I've got the basic Tommy Igoe pattern almost worked out but I'm at that point where I need to be able to work it into some real music.  Since I'm no AfroCuban expert I need to listen to a bunch of songs using this rhythm. So, I need your help.  I want to compile a playlist of songs in SONGO for reference.  I've got a couple of books, the Igoe stuff, etc. but much of this is created for the drummer to play along. I want the real thing. AND, I'm such a novice, I can't always discern which AfroCuban/Latin pattern is being used.  So, if you KNOW what I'm talking about and have some suggestions, please shoot!

Here are some albums that have Songo grooves on them:

One of the best references to listen to would be the band Los Van Van with the legendary Changuito, simply because he is credited as the author of Songo. Check out this album ... Que Pista, which didn't show up on Amazon.  Undecided

I'll list some more later if you need them.

+1 on the Los Van Van. Great source for drum-set Afro Cuban.

Yea, I've got that also.  If I remember it's Joel on some songs and Weckl on others.  I'll have to go back and give that another listen or two.

Bart, Most Excellent and THANKS.  Any chance you could point out a few of the individual songs that are specifically SONGO.  My guess is that each album you referenced has a variety and I might just want to buy individual tracks right now.  Thanks again..
