There's another chapter topic... How much of the time in the studio do you actually get to play a part that you would naturally come up with? vs. How many times the artist or producer already has something in mind and makes you stick with that idea?  Then demonstrate what part you had in mind vs. what part you actually had to play.

You already share this information freely with us all the time here (THANKS!).  To actually see it happen as it went down in a high-stakes studio environment (like the situation you just described) would be invaluable.  Probably not very feasible, I realize, but still would be most instructive.

I dunno, just random thoughts bouncing around in my thick skull.  Very interesting slant this thread has taken.

This discussion is intriguing.  I'd love to see it go to DVD.    Smiley

Motion seconded.

I'd really love a DVD that kind of explains how a groove goes from a part (What you can write on paper) to a performance, with everything that makes it live and breathe and work, among the other things mentioned previously. The DVD's I've seen focus very heavily on WHAT you're playing, with the only how revolving around stick/foot technique.

Rolling right along with the concept...

Next DVD topic:  What seemingly "outlandish" things are suggested or forced upon the musicians in the studio, aside from the actual patterns?

For example, how many people outside of the forums know that you recorded the drums and cymbals separately on "Shooting Rubberbands..."?  That's something that would put most drummers in a state of cardiac arrest if forced to do that, I should think.

The only other album I've heard about that being done on was the Queens Of The Stone Age album from a few years back that Dave Grohl played on.  I'm sure there's many more recordings that the general drumming public doesn't know about that were recorded in ways outside the "norm" (whatever the norm is... Tongue)

These things are of far more interest to me (and I suspect many others) than how to play double paradiddles on your feet while playing 9-stroke rolls on your hands over the top of that at 220 bpm.

A confession straight from the heart: I started playing drums around Chris got the drum chair with Dire Straits. At that time I was a huge fan of the Dire Straits, (loved Alchemy live, and Bros in Arms). And Terry Williams was my first ever DRUMHERO (cause of his Keith Moon-like / intuitive style of playing). In a TV interview Mark Knopfler (around on ever street came out and the tour was about to commence) said that they needed a new drummer. Chris got the job because of his gig (playing) with Paul Mc Cartney. And couldn't find a better drummer who could play the music. I believe these were the exact words. But for me: Terry wasn't there anymore Cry. Mourned for many years. Got over it the moment I became a member of this forum ;-).

Several of the people you've been debating in several threads have recording credits with people you've probably heard of.

I've been through my share of drum books and I honestly believe that Tommy Igoe's book is not only one of the best, but one of the most practical drum books that I have ever come across.

Yeah man, it's so solid. Tommy is one of the best drummers around today. I doubt anyone disagrees with that either.

It looks like the first DVD presents actual drum parts in actual musical contexts.  That's appealing to me.  When I work with books of abstract exercises (Stick Control, The New Breed, etc.) I often have a hard time relating those to actual music.

A lot of the stuff on the first DVD looks more complicated than anything I'd actually play, but might be great to practice as purely technical exercises.

f the second DVD is more advanced, I can't see myself benefiting from it.

Just note that if you want to see Tommy, and you don't catch this particular night, there are many more.

He plays in NYC very frequently.
