I don't know lots of musical "Influence" there. The recorded works of the Beatles and Ringo's role in them is really quite amazing and will continue to be dissected and analyzed for many, many years to come.

I'm confused - are you referring to the PAS list as I don't see Neil Peart's name on it?

A name not mentioned that I wouldn't mind seeing on both lists would be Hal Blaine's.

David

Dave H. said that those drummers may be more popular with you, but not with me. I was refering to Ringo in that same way. In many ways he is popular because of Beatles fame and I also think that he has had a big influence on many. Did he make a difference in drumming? Many would say yes...for me, no. Dave, seemed to feel that way about Peart. I didn't want to start a debate on it, I should not typed it or worded it better.
I reference Neil Peart from the MD list saying the same arguement of popular vs making a difference could be made by many.

Looking over the PAS list, I don't remember the last time I felt to humble.

I agree, it is humbling. So many of the listings are of percussionist who have shown themselves to be so professional and shown great respect for the perc heritage.

I keep wanting to see Philly Joe Jones on one of them. He was a big influence on me.

Firstly, I'd be quite happy if Hall's Of Fame were pulled down.
I know it's an American tradition, but I rarely find the inductees a fair cross section of worthy individuals - I'm not really talking about drummers exclusively here, but bands etc.
Secondly, popularity should have little to do with a Hall Of Fame nomination.
Neil Peart for example is far from one of my favourites, but it's clear he's stamped his personality on the world of drumming and influenced/inspired more than one generation of younger drummers.

I agree. I think I will nominate him next time around for the PAS list.

The PAS list is, of course, more than drumset artists, but there are quite a good number of set players on there. They tend to be the ones who influenced great numbers of drummers, Warren Dodds, Papa Jo Jones, Louis Bellson, Jim Chapin, Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones ...

I have attended the Hall of Fame banquet at PASIC a few times. The coolest part is the people who are there. Last year, when Baby Dodds was inducted (posthumously, of course), the audience included Ed Shaughnessy, Louis Bellson, and Steve Houghton. In 2004 in Nashville, when Shaughnessy was inducted, the ceremony ran late and there were no seats left for the Nexus concert afterwards. Me being the scoundrel that I am, I went around to the backstage area and snuck in a back door and stood off stage right watching. Mark Ford, then President of PAS came in the same door, carrying Ed's Hall of Fame trophy. He told me Ed didn't want to have to carry it on the plane, so Mark was going to ship it to him. Then Mark had to be onstage for a presentation, so he hands me the trophy for safe keeping.

So I can honestly say that I have been given the PAS Hall of Fame Award. Grin

Thank you.  Someone needed to say that, but I wasn’t going to.

Frankly, I find the upturned noses regarding Neil Peart to be rather reactionary. Whether you like him or not, it’s hard to deny that the man is a giant in the world of drumming.  I think many drummers are resentful of Neil because he has achieved a level of fame and notoriety they don’t believe he deserves because he is not a jazz drummer and because does not possess the technical skills of many lesser known but great drummers.  Peart is not a shallow circus act; his drumming moves people.  Isn’t that what music is all about?

On edit: No, I'm not trying to turn this into another Neil thread!   Tongue

It would be nice to further explore popularity versus greatness, though.  I don’t think these are by any means mutually exclusive traits.  While I certainly believe there are many schlocky but popular drummers and artists out there, I think there’s a rather stodgy and elitist bent to much of the crictism of drummers that is based principally on their popularity or record sales (as if selling a lot of records is a mark against an artist).  There is definitely a bias among many jazz drummers against rock drummers.

But I'm not pro or anti 'popular' drummers, I'm just saying you can't bring personal likes and dislikes into the arena of houring musicians for their contribution.
This thread actually highlights the major flaw in the Hall Of Fame concept for me.

Agreed.  The key word is "contribution."

I'm very surprised to see Ed Shaughnessy's name not in MD's HOF.  I bet we'll see near-future additions of Gregg Bissonette and Hal Blaine, w/ Keith Carlock, Carter Beauford, and Marco Minneman down the road.

Simon Phillips' 2003 addition was LONG overdue.

On a more cynical note...considering whom they've put in their initial "Drum Gods" issue last year...maybe I *should* be surprised they didn't put Dave Grohl in their HOF by now. (!)

I think the world of Grohl, btw.  I consider him to be a greatly overrated drummer, though.  Like a few others on their list.

Indeed!  I absolutely love Simon's playing.  He just electrifies everything he touches.

I agree about Ed Shaughnessy.

Thanks for the response.  That's what I was looking for: names.

Awards and Hall of Fame inductions quickly become meaningless as more and more peopled are honored and the stable runs thin of those who really deserve recognition. While I can't say I find fault with any of the names on the PAS list (nice to see names like Cirone and Kraft instead of that guy with the Kabuki mask and Portnoy =P) it already raised a couple questions just in this thread.

For the sake of the thread though, I'd give Carmine his due in MD.

Speaking of Readers Polls and Neil Peart, it seems its not over yet. Be watching DRUM! Magazines soon to be released results in the Drummie Awards. Put all your money on Neil to win top position again.  Grin

Just say, "Where the deuce is Andy Newmark?" and be on with it.  Grin

We Americans love our lists, and impartiality has never been part of it. The fact that Gary Husband (among many others) barely makes a mention in these discussions is just proof how naive we are in this country about players (outside of the rock/pop world) beyond our borders. (And as I say this, Gary's playing a gig with Level 42)

i'm not a big fan of ANY "best drummer list" or "hall of fame" list... but i cannot believe the ausences of Philly Joe Jones, Papa Jo Jones, David Garibaldi, Clyde Stubblefield and Mel Lewis.
