Hey guys! Well it's finally come together, this Monday construction is starting on the tracking room for my little studio. And in the tracking room I want to have a feature wall painted with a piece of art of some kind. The dimensions are ~2.3 x 5.8 meters. I was thinking, that after the artwork for the feature wall had been decided on, I would hang an acoustically neutral fabric of some colour, around the rest of the room (to hide the acoustic treatments and general sonic goings-on). Furthermore, the control room needs to be painted but I am a little unsure of what colour scheme to go with. The acoustic treatment going on the wall is a charcoal grey colour so I guess it has to work with that. Any suggestions for general colour schemes in the control room/tracking room would be great, and if anyone has any ideas/concepts/suggestions for the art on the feature wall that would great too. Also, anyone who's worked in some studios, I'd appreciate it if you could share you thoughts on their colour scheme and working in that environment. Ultimately I want people to feel comfortable AND inspired (otherwise I'd just leave it white  ) Thanks! |

Congrats Antman on all your hardwork and dedication!
Neutral tones are best if you want to sell. In fact, as much as I love a gaudy studio I would like to do my CR room in earth tones next time around. Then I can truly be "The Hobbit"

The last studio enviornment that seemed calming to me where i could concentrate better was done in a dark maroon with the black foam baffles here and there. Bright colors such as orange, yellow, reds, etc distract me. I like darker colors, kelly green, maroon, beige for a lighter color. Unlike most people im definitely affected by color for mood setting. Do a google search on colors and moods.

My two cents ... paint it the way you want. I don't buy into the whole paint it neutral for resell. If you are getting ready to sell, sure, but why paint it some lame color now just so you can sell it in ten years? I don't get that, yet I hear it all the time. Paint isn't that expensive; repaint it when you plan to sell if need be. In the mean time, enjoy!

You have to pick a colour that you think you can live/work in for many, many hours.
Some colour psychology might help, however:
People concentrate best in yellow rooms, but are more likely to get angry.
Red will tend to make you hungry.
Blue appears cold to most people.
When I did my studio up recently, I chose a Saffron Yellow, which is earthy, but retains a feeling of brightness in a room with no windows. I chose it because it's a colour I enjoy being in, and it feels warm and comfortable to me.
I think in the end, you have to go with your artistic inclinations on this one.

Exactly. In our last house, we painted every room a different color. We got nothing but compliments on it, and if you stood in the kitchen, you could see every different color at once. Just go to the hardware store and pick out something that gets your juices flowing. Nate |

go with your gut. i've never been a green person, but this past year i was drawn to sage and bay leaf-y green tones and like them a lot. deeper shades of grey-blue could complement your charcoal grey area, too. i also tend toward the warm tones; however don't go so dark that it's hard to see. the room has to function. as for the art, my only 2 thoughts are: to get a really talented artist if you want actual 'art'--eg; something painted. i've seen some truly bad murals in my day. second--evoke a mood; either get something that people understand at first glance--a very bold, simple graphic, or something more ethereal that people will contemplate for a while. friend of mine has a really cool oversized painting that at first glance looks like color blocks of red. further inspection reveals a haunting image of a man's face. it's way cool. congrats on the studio! i just started looking into carpet and sound-attenuating solutions for mine, and realized this is gonna cost me a lot of clams. yoo-hooooo-oh, feeeeeelixxx......!  |

Light colors are good because if you sell the place it's good to have neutral colors. Plus you can spot and find lost things easier.  |

In regards to selling the place, for the tracking room at least, everything is removable. So resell value isn't a factor, plus I agree with Bart, when/if it comes time to sell, I can repaint then, but we only built this house about a month ago, we have no intention of moving for many years to come!
