Hey I got to hear a friend of mine play last night out at the beach.  He was using a Orange County vented snare with the large holes and it sounded great.

Anyone have one?  I was wondering how versatile they are.  Can you get different sounds from tuning?  He uses his for outdoor venues because of the volume.  He is not a big experimenter so he had no answer for some of my questions.

Rock on !

There are a ton of much more amazing sounding snare drums at a fraction of the cost.
I wouldn't stress too much about volume either.
