Hi,

After a year of drumming hiatus, I'm looking for a new band and currently shopping for a new kit. My last kit was a Mapex Pro-M Maple and, even though I just loved the sound of the kick, I always had trouble getting the 12" tom to sound good (the 16" floor was okay). Both toms were tunes fine (well, I did my best...) and had clear Emperor/Ambassador on.

I'd like to get a kit that would be an upgrade from the Pro-M Maple with (again) a great kick sound and highly responsive toms. The snare isn't important since I may leave it at the store (I'm already equipped with good snares, my main being a 14x6.5 Mapex BP Hammered Bronze Phosphor). All I need really is a three piece — kick+12+16 (or 14) — plus the hardware. Also, a virgin kick would be nice.

My budget is $1300 CAN, including carrying bags and new heads if necessary. I already have cymbals. Oh, and I play rock in the John Bonham/Chad Smith/Dave Grohl style.

Thanks for your help!

P.S.: Of course, I'm planning a tour of the nearby Drum Shops to try them up. Starting tonight!

Pro M's are great kits. For 1300 it may be difficult to do better than that on the new market.

The tuning issues could be many things not including the drum. I think some shopping and testing is your best course.

You're right. I'll check them out again at the Drumshop and seek help there with the tuning thing.

I was also thinking of checking out the Taye Studio Maple and (the less expensive) ProX.
