I'm very sad to report that the legendary Buddy Harman died on Thursday, suffering from  congestive heart failure; he was 79 years old.

Buddy Harman was one of Nashville's most-recorded drummers, playing drums on more than 18,000 recordings, including Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman," Patsy Cline's "Crazy," Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire," Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" and Elvis Presley's "Little Sister."

He was an early staff drummer on the Grand Ole Opry and among the first prominent drummers in country music history. Country music historian Eddie Stubbs called Harman the father of modern country drumming.

Buddy suffered from congestive heart failure.

Well that is bad news, but he had a wonderful career, played with/for many of the greats-even Ringo (wasn't he supposedly the 1st drummer to actually play a set at the Grand Ole Opry?). I remember him in a Modern Drummer interview around '78 or '79. That was back when it was rare for MD to interview a country drummer, after reading it I was really surprised with just how many sessions he did.

R.I.P Buddy.

Yes, first staff drummer to play on the Grand Ole Opry ... and the first to use a full set. Initially it was just a Snare drum played behind a curtain.

The first drumset on stage at the Grand Ole Opry was Bob Wills Band back in 1944. Drums at the Opry were expressly forbidden, so when Bob Wills' had drummer Monte Mountjoy play his full kit on stage ... it was a big deal. It wasn't until 10 years later that Buddy Harman was brought on board. Drums were still banned, but they started introducing the Snare drum by the curtain, later to have it banned again, then brought back again.

Buddy did a lot of performing drummers and music in general ... not just for country music.

Thank you Buddy!

Just heard this today. I had read that Buddy was a gentleman also. When Ringo showed up for the 'Beaucoups of Blues' sessions, Buddy jumped up out of the drum chair and proceeded to grab the bass. To me, that spoke leaps and bounds about his character. Even though Buddy was probably the better drummer, he still had respect enough to make room.
