After years of playing in a club/party band with 5B sticks, I recently joined a Fife and Drum band.  After some adjustment, I got used to the much larger sticks used for fife drumming (Vic Firth MS3).  It's going great, except that when I play with my club band, the 5B's feel much too light.  It takes some time to switch back and forth between the two stick sizes.  It's like match sticks vs baseball bats.

I'm considering using larger sticks for my club band so I don't need to go through this re-adjustment every time I go back and forth between bands.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Welcome aboard!!

Personally, the best advice I can give is "get used to it".  I.e. the feel of both types of sticks.  It's all about using the right tool for the job.  I think the more you switch back and forth between gigs and stick requirements, the more you will get used to them--and thus the control needed with each.

Congrats on being in such a diverse drumming situation.
Nice work.

I went through the same thing while playing in the Army band. We would do parades with 2B sticks, but then concerts with smaller sticks. I also had a rock band during those years. So for concerts and drumset use I switched to Regal Tip 7a. Which I still use on my sets today. I got used to it by practice on a pad using both sizes. I got over it and still play just fine. I have to agree with Jon E, "get used to it." Have fun, you'll live through it....  Cheesy

A quick way to fool your hands into thinking the 5Bs are more hefty is to do this:

After playing with the fife-band sticks, but before picking up the 5Bs, grab a pair of 7As or something similar, and go through some patterns and routines with them until they start feeling like sticks as opposed to toothpicks. Then pick up the 5Bs, which I bet will feel much more substantial by comparison.

I went through this when I was in the marching band at Indiana University, and that's the trick I came up with for making the transition between big sticks and little ones in the course of the same afternoon.

Good advice from all, I go through the same thing from 2S to 7A.

I usually just 'push on through', it doesn't bother me starting with the heavier ones, I've used them more through the years, but when I first pick up the 7A they seem out of balance and little toothpicks. They don't have the bite!Couple of songs in and I forget about it.

I might try Mr. A's recomendation, if I actually got time to warm up.

All good tips, especially the one about warming up with 7A's for awhile.  Thank you all.
