my only concern about this whole shpeal is that this measurement does work for most guys...so I'm just trying to find out if my setup is, like, really weird or something. I'm an engineer, so I have no prob. with the methodoligy...
Well, unless you don't straddle your snare drum like 99.99% of the rest of the drumset community, our set-ups are the same as they relate to this mic set-up that was previously described. If it's all over the snare drum and two stick lengths high ... I would say set-up has little to do with it. More like smacking the mic as your play is a bigger issue.
You know, I just got up from a nap ... and what was I thinking ... but about this thread! LOL
If the mic over the snare is 30 to 36 inches above, then the other mic would need to be at least 90 inches away if it's also pointing down at the snare ... otherwise, phase cancellation. One sure way to check this is run everything mono. If you notice a huge loss in presence or everything sounds mid-ranged ... you've got phase cancellation.
