recently . . . . . . . . . my cat!;D    budum bum, krash! Roll Eyes

I have a Roger's 16x24 with an Evans EQ2 batter and Remo (eewwww) Ambassador resonant. I use a thin felt-covered foam pillow that was actually meant for stand packing, but is similar to the dedicated pillows they sell. In addition to the built-in muffle ring in the head this, pressed lightly against the bottom of the batter, seems enough. I have a Beta 52 on my own version of an internal mount and XLR jack.

I'm using one of the Aquarian pre-muffled heads, so there's nothing in the kick except the mike.  Not sure if I'm totally in love with pre-muffled heads, though.

It's an 18" floortom converted into a bassdrum. Tuned up properly it sounds warm and punchy. No holes in the resonant head.

I have Jimmy Hoffa in my bass drum (shhh, don't tell anyone where he is).  He helps me achieve that "dead" sound like I liked so much in the 70's.

When I was in college I was asked to jam with a country band once.  It totally sucked...I hated them and of course they didn't like me much either...well I went to pick up my Tama Swingstar 5 piece a day or two later and lo and behold to my surprise their cat crept into my bass drum, crapped and crept out.  I don't know if it was the kit or my playing that annoyed the flea bitten varmint.

The cat crept, crapped and then crept again?  Hey, try to say that five times fast Smiley

I guess today's lesson is brought to us by the letter 'C'

Maybe the cat was offering you some extra muffling?  Them country cats like a well muffled bass drum.

I have about 1" thick orange/pinkish foam. Kinda funny looking, but i have it wrapped around the inside of my 22" kick and held down with good ol' duck tape.

I use the aquarian force 1 on the batter and force 2 on the reso and thats it. It sounds great with nothing in it and i'm not changing. I dont gig like most of you guys so its good for me and where the set is.

I have a medium sized white towel in there, making just a little bit of contact with the front head.

I have the factory installed heads, the batter looks like the clear Evans Genera 2, I think. The one with the built in ring. The resonant is black Premier logo. It is a 20"er and sounds great.
It sure beats the bean bag shair filing I used in the 80's

As unpopular as this idea might be ... a studio / live sound engineer can play a part in kick drum dampening.  i, both as a player and sound engineer always start with nothing at all dampening anything.  & then, if there are any problems, dampen minimally.  i guess i am trying to avoid "chocking" off any of the drums' natural resonance.

I have a pillow folded just touching both heads...gives it a real nice low punchy sound.  If i can find a smaller pillow ill actually lay it on the bottom.

funny,

but this is the thread that got me interested in Aquarian's Super Kick I's for my lil 18" bass.  got 'em and loved 'em!

these days, i'm experimenting with an Evans EMAD, which has the funky external mufflin' stuff.  very cool, but if the beater isnt hitting the head dead center, then, the mufflers dont seem to be all that different sounding.  when it does, however, very fun, not to mention versatile to use.  other than the funky beater placement, its still a very cool head.

but bottom line, for small basses, the SKI is the way to go.  has a more pronounced lower mid & bass punch that really rocks.

... their cat crept into my bass drum, crapped and crept out.

Isn't that a poem by Carl Sandburg?
