I'm in a club/pub venue covers band and our audiences go up and down all the time. What started a big decline was the introduction of drink driving blitzs here which repelled a lot of punters from travelling out. Courtesy coaches don't bring enough in.
Our best nights would be private functions where we have to have a versatile repotoire to cover 7 to 70 year olds. This is because you have a dedicated crowd.
Audience numbers don't really matter to us and we enjoy the opportunity to play and as a reward get a few buck in our pocket. We use the flat night to try some new material, add libbing etc to spice it up for ourselves. And that can be entertaining in itself.

We had SARS-Stock here yesterday.

I think it really demonstrates that live music is not on the decline, bars are on the decline.  Bands need to find other venues.

I liked you better when you were a girl.  Wink
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!  heh... that was funny!

play in churches. peoplewill always be there, even if they don't like your music.  though getting into the church will be a problem if you don't play christian music.  charge a buck a ticket or make them free.  you may call me crazy but ave you ever seen a "love offering"?  more than you will ever make from any club.

now i'm not promoting the church as a money making opportunity... just bragging again!  hahaha Grin

well....maybe i was...   Roll Eyes idunno

I'd love to play for my church band. I go to the teen mass at my church and the people are SO into the music. A couple of weeks ago there was a new drummer... I'm not sure if he was a permanent replacement or just one for that night...

I played an all-ages show last night with an 11PM curfew.  As the opener, we started our set at 7:30!  It was great to stumble out of the club to load out and still see the sun.

Seattle is experiencing one of its periodic lulls in live music appreciation.  There was an explosion four years ago of really interesting and unique bands but many of those bands have passed on or have proven to be not as interesting in the long run.  Although Seattle can normally sustain a healthy live music scene, the adventurous sort who used to go see two or three shows a week regardless of who's playing are staying home more.  Seattle is the second worst-hit metropolitan area by unemployment and the Dot-Com Crash (right behind San Francisco.)  Speaking for myself, I moved away from downtown, bought a house and started having kids.  That effectively ended my adventurous spirit!  I felt really punk rock going to our show last night with my nine-month-old son's snot stains on my t-shirt!
