I was wondering if anyone either had experience with or knew of a versatile snare drum stand that would fit smaller diameter drums??

I'm looking for a stand that would fit virtually any size drum, specifically as small as 5" (for tabla) as well as for small toms (i.e. 10").

I did a google search on this and the smallest size fitting stand was for 12" drums.

Not sure if such a stand even exists but does anyone have any ideas or knowledge of such a stand?

I've got a PEARL snare stand that is made for 12 inch drums, and it doesn't do very well with 10 inch drums as it doesn't fully grab hold of the drum.

I'm in the process of modifying this stand so that it will work with smaller diameter drums. It's going to be fairly easy to modify really ... all I need to do is put a thick washer/spacer above the threading so that it pushes the cradle up higher, thus tightening the grab.

I'll let you know how it works.  Cool

Scott, one of the drum companies makes spacers to put on your stand so that it will hold a smaller snare. For the life of me I cannot think of the company. Also, Mapex drums makes a snare stand with a higher center thread and they claim that it will fit any size snare drum. To see it go here http://www.mapexdrums.com/hardware/stands/S950.html

supposedly the new pearl s-2000 stand with adjustable hooks can get down to 10" ...

ive actually used my cheapo sound percussion stand for my tabla and for a 9" tom ive got.  it wasnt the most stable on the tabla, but it worked.  i believe talvin singh and karsh kale just use regular snare stands for thier tabla as well.  just sinch 'em up as much as possible.  id hit up the local shops and just screw those things up till they cant go no more Smiley

actually, just had an idea.  if you get a cheap stand you may be able to bend the arms in further.  so instead of reaching out say 7" from center, you can make it reach out only 5" from center.  make sense?

there is a tabla stand out there, but its like $300 and not really anything more than padded steel hoops on a normal stand base.  im planning on using two snare baskets on one base for mine Smiley

It might be easier to simply slap a tom mount on the side of these tiny snares, and mount it off a tom arm/multiclamp thingie.

Personally, I think this is the easiest and simplest solution. The only exception might be if you plan to use this as your primary snare drum ... and plan to use it as such in your drumkit set-up.

id have to agree with Bartman on this one.....ive got a 3x13 piccolo snare that ive mounted this way and it works great.....but i still keep my primary snare on a stand of its own.......another thing to consider is that if the smaller snare is on a tom/multiclamp setup you dont have haul around another seperate stand for it....just have to carry another clamp.....just my pair of copper pieces
