I'm looking for a good tom sound, nice and full, but not ringing.  I've seen people put the coated heads on them will that give me the sound im looking for?

if not, what will?

thanks in advance!!

Maybe go with a coated two ply depends on how much you want to dampen your overtones, how you tune and your drums.  If you have a beater kit or a solid maple kit, the same head will give you different results.

It takes a while to figure out the best sound for your kit and you and then you have the right to change your mind just like that.

You know you can always try TAPE as a last resort and a tuning key.  Those are very low cost fixes.  We like to use tube tape around here.  I like to roll duct tape up tight with the sticky side out.

Yes, coated heads will help tame the ringing (as will thicker heads, good tuning, etc.), but a little bit of ringing is a good thing IMO.  It helps your toms cut through all the noise those other guys in the band are making.  Wink  Eliminating the ringing may sound good behind the kit, but to the audience they'll sound like dull thuds (unless your drums are miked, of course).

for the sound you describe, I like Remo coated Ambassador on top and Remo coated diplomat on bottom.  Then, tune both top/bottom to same note for max resonance.

I prefer coated single-ply heads on my toms.  They really make the toms sing. The clears are a bit bright and the 2-ply heads are just too dead for my tastes.

Well if you want full and warm with a little ring I'd say combine either Evans G2's ( or Aquarian Double Thins, Remo Emperors) with some small cut up Moon Gel. I've been loving using the Moon Gel as it let's you be specific about how much you cut down ring and target where the ring is on the head. Either with the 2 ply choices above or with single ply (G1, Ambassador, Satin Texture) the moon gel would help you 'tweak' as opposed to an all out Remo Ring or pre-muffled/dry head solution.

My 2 cents.

I just picked up some Moon Gel this week and like it very much. Went to a local GC to get a 13" muffle ring for my new snare but they were out of stock. The drummy who was there recommended trying the moon gel. As Cavanman mentioned in his post, it really provides lots of options for getting the optimum ring/muffle sound gradation from your drums.

work on tuning options as well when trying to get the "right" amount of ring.  if youre top and bottom heads are in tune, they will ring more because they are in phase (see some other posts on details, bart explains this well) if you pull one head slightly out of tune, itll effect the phase of the heads and kill some of the resonance.

personally i love coated tom heads.  i like the slightly drier sound and trimmed off high end i get.  if i need more ring to get heard, i tune 'em so they ring.

thanks guys.  i didnt really mean no ringing at all, just not so much that it sounds bad.  the ones i have now are remo clear pinstripes...they seem ok, but u dont like the way they respond to the sticks really.  and they ring alot, too much.

I thought pisntripes were self muffling? Anyways, they've always sounded pretty dead on my set, so, who knows?

Tune your bottom head tighter to get a deader sound. Less ring, sounds very powerful. With Pinstripes, it should work well (it has for me)

That's an old Bonham trick by the way(at least I've seen it credited to him).
