Well, I made the huge leap into the abyss of eternal spending. Used the tax refund this year take the plunge.
The full set of four set me back $2400 after the huge discount that my local drum store owner Sandy gave me!

I'll provide some sound clips to add this thread soon!
BTW, thanks to the folks who've mentioned Sol and Akbar on the list. It was part of my decision to go with Sol.

The cuban study group came over last night and we played them for several hours as we do each Thursday, and this was the first time everyone got to play the new drums. Everyone was very impressed, and Eric said that if they sound that good now, then I'll really be happy in a few years. Apparently they keep getting better with age, sorta like a fine wine!  Wink

I've been working with my new mp3 recorder (the learning curve is a steep one since it has its own little harddrive) and will have some sound samples soon.
These really are nice drums! The tones were just killer last night!

I visited his shop a few years ago when he was just getting the Sol Percussion thing going. Akbar can replace a conga head absurdly quickly!
He has a lot of opinions, theories, observations about conga design and he certainly make a unique instrument!

What are the sizes of those things? One looks like a tumbatoda (kinda), but the others seem to be the same size.

Nice investment there.  Gorgeous drums.  Surprised at how small around the bellies are though, hows the bass response? wait, dont answer that.  Give us a nice big "GEAR REVIEW" when you can Smiley

Awesome review, by the way.   Smiley  I LOVE how those congas look, too!  Looking forward to hearing the sound samples!   Wink

Here's a sound file with us playing "Shiko" with the Sol Congas. You can easy pick out the tones from the all the white noise at the party.

Here's an mp3 with just the drums. Quinto, Segundo, Tumba. We're playing "Palo" - 6/8 Bembe-like rhythm.
