im going to assume its a surdu of some sort.  thing is with soulfly they use a bunch of different african and latin percussion and its not always so easy to tell because its never used in a traditional context.   but on thier site they have a real media vid for that song and i saw a couple cats playing what looked like surdus.  essentially a cylinder drum like a bass drum, but often times smaller diameter.  thats a guess Smiley

I would say they are not surdo drums, as these sound basically like a bass drum ... because that's what they are ... cylindrical bass drums, that look like giant floor toms.

If it sounds like a timbale, it's going to be a repenique.
30x23cm   (8")
30x25cm (10")
30x31cm (12")

They really aren't that big, but it's a double-sided metal drum ... no snares. The Brazilian snare drum is called a caixa.

i was thinking repinque but if you saw the vid, the drums they play are wood and bigger than any rep. ive heard of.  hence the surdu guess.  but youre absolutely right that a rep. would sound more timbale-esque.
