and WOW!
didnt know if this counted as part of the gear reviews thread, so i thought i'd just mention it here.
anywho, i've only been playing for a short while now, and have yet to really develop an ear for drums, but this is the first kit, to make me step back and go,

"woah..."[kneau off]
it was a Jarrah, natural satin finish 4 piece set w/ 14x5.5 snare. very much like the finish on this one from the Brady website, except it was setup like a jazzy 3 piece, with the larger tom on the right of the snare:

the bass was probably 22x18, and had a loverly deep tone. the shop had it a little too muffled for my tastes, and strangely the front head was looked like a texture coated white head of some sort, but still cool nonetheless. the rack and floor toms were tuned nicely, and had a quick attack and short ring with what appeared to be regular clear ambassadors. but the one 12x10 next to the snare was kinda strange. was tuned high like most 12x10s i've heard, but rang out like a mofo, and had a sustain that wasnt just ringy, but full, fat, mellifluous. the only way i can describe it is as if it was a small gong drum. quite peculiar, but still very cool.
and the snare kicked major butt. measured as a 14x5.5, but they had it tuned tight so it sounded like a fatter 12" snare. poppy, yet deep and resonant. would probably have an incredibly wide tuning range.
finally playing a brady after hearing so much about 'em, really made me a believer. but unfortunately, the sticker shock nearly floored me. easily the most expensive of the store, and it was only a 4 piece w/ snare.

still if there was a set to save up for, this would be it.
oh, and big shout out to Long Island Drum Center. i did the arduous journey from NYC to middle LI, and the traffic is notoriously bad for a short 45 mi. jaunt. took me nearly an hour and a half. but, was well worth it. like all y'all near Forks', or the Drum Pad, or any of those other amazing drum super shops, i felt very lucky, especially the great service they provided.
