and if you are left handed how do u play your kit? i am a lefty but i play exactly like a righty would with the crossed hands. i tried to play left handed and i couldnt do it  im just interested to see how many lefty drummers there are out there will |

As is the custom with these polls, somebodies got to complain about the lack of choices!!  I am a mixed breed. I do most of the finemotor stuff, eating and writing, left handed. I do large motor stuff, throwing and tasks that require strength, right handed. This ends up with me playing right handed. If I knew when I started what I know now I would have learned open hand playing but, instead play the traditional crossed hands. My left hand is probably better than it would be if I was strictly right handed , but not by much.  |

I'm right handed and play right handed with about 95% of my playing right hand lead.
In the fusion band I play some patterns beginning with the left...not many though.

i can play both ways, but i'm mainly a right hander. if i play left handed, i just turn everything backwards. hats on the right, bass on the left foot, and instead of the toms going from 12 13 13 14 16 16, it goes (from left to right) 16 16 14 13 13 12. its like a mirror image

I'm left-handed and play a right-handed kit. When I was a kid, I was taught by a very good, but conservative teacher, so I was forced to play right-handed.
In the long run I feel that this was an advantage. It allows me to play open or cross handed, and forced my weak side (right) to become strong.

I had to vote ambidextrious but I sometimes call it ambistupid.. I usually can't decide wich way to do things.. most everything I was taught to do I do right handed (write, throw, bat) things I tought myself I do left handed (darts, pool, tennis). since I am about to get my first kit this and some other threads on this forum have convinced me that I should probably play a right handed kit but possibly with the left hand on the HH.. I have already discovered in my practice pad exercises that my right hand is the first to drag or loose the beat if I start pushing my speed up a notch or two.. I tend to subconscously lead my exercises with my left hand.. if I think play a paradidle I always start with the left.
but being that I am somewhat ambidextrious these things should go away with practice.. and practice.. and more practice.. etc..

im a lefty that sets up a right hand kit. left hand on the highhat, ride cymbal just above the hat. in my whole life i've only seen maybe 6 or 7 people play like this. im suprised so many of you guys play this way. i thought i was a freak.

I am right handed and set up right handed, but I taught myself how to ride the hi-hat with my left hand. A while back, a band leader asked me why I played the hi-hat with my left hand. My answer was very simple, "because my hi-hat is on the left side of my kit." DUH! I still ride with my right hand when playing my ride cymbal. For obvious reasons, the ride cymbal is on the right side of my kit. DUH! Needless to stay developiing the ability to ride with either hand has made me a more versitile drummer. I wrote a book entitled Double Ride Combinations. In the into of my book, I make the case for why a drummer should be ambidexterous.
