Can anyone provide information on the Gon Bops "mariano" model conga? Also any links to general Gon Bops information.

Thanks

They are a budget line with black finished hardware instead of chrome, classic cuban style banding, the wood is mahogony finished in a less polished fashion.

Some of these drums sound great and look pretty nice too.

Thanks!
I'm looking into buying a pair of these. You obviously know more than I do. Is $400 a fair price?  I am somewhat familar with the Gon Bops name and reputation. In general, what should I look for?

Thanks again!

I'd scoop them up right away.  I'm playing a set of mariano's.  I love the mahogany sound.  I bougt my set for $600, for a quinto and high conga.  I wouldn't sell them for $1500.  You can't get mahogany drums anymore because of the ban on importing it from Brazil.  When I got mine they had a crack in both drums, though not a major one.  These mahogany drums are famous for cracking, but I really don't think it affects the sound much.
In some of the pictures I've seen of Munequitos de Matanzas, they play big fiberglass LP's for all the supporting parts, and a mahogany Gon Bops for the leads.  I think it's because of the crisp cutting sound of the mahogany drums!
OK, I've rambled on long enough now!  To sum it up, my vote is BUY THEM!

Thanks for your advice! I just purchased a conga and tumba that appear to be in good condition for $400! Any additional advice on care and restoration would be appreciated.

Thanks again!
