How many of you make an effort to drink a lot of water when you practice, and even more so when you perform?

I always keep plenty of water handy when I'm performing; prevents dehydration and flushes out any toxins. Just yesterday I took a gallon of Spring Water with me too my recording session. For me, Spring Water is the bomb! It's nothing for me to finish off a gallon of it every day when in the studio.

Although you will have to make a trip to the restroom at every break, it's worth the hassle. In fact, I use it to my advantage when I play club dates; I can skirt past those individuals that I'd rather not talk to for the ENTIRE break!!!  Cool

It may sound weird, but I absolutely love water. I don't know why I love something that tastes like, well, water... but I do. Copious amounts of water is really the best thing for your body, whether you're a drummer or not.

But I also really like beer. It's a social thing for the cover band I play in. We also do shots just prior to every gig. But between second and third sets, I dig my big water bottle out of the bag and drink that for the third set and also rehydrate myself that way during breakdown and the trip home.

Water is good.

   Gatoraid , I freeze them and there nice and cold as they slowly melt during a practice session or show.
I use them at work also so I have the melt down rate to a science .  Wink

Interesting you mention sports drinks cause I was just thinking about that after I posted my reply. I personally like them, but after hearing how loaded they are with sugars and additives, I've been sticking to water lately.

  yeah , but when you sweat it comes out in the color of the flavor your drinking and looks cool as hell under a black light !! Grin

    Seriously , lately my wife has got me hooked on the Wal-mart sparkling waters . No cals , no sugar , no salt.
 I'm not sure if it has water in there . But it's good and is cheap , about .50 cents a liter .

     It's all a step in the right direction for me , back in the days of playing bars and weddings with drinks included in the gig fee....... , well you get the idea.

I don't care how good it is for me...I drink water on gigs but not gallons.  I always said that drinking water is like drinking N/A Beer- for people who like to pee.  Personally I hate pissing and try to keep it down to a minimum.

Did you know that the first sign of dehydration is a headache?

I only drink a couple of glasses a day....love alcohol and cranberry juice.  I have to be careful with alcohol.

I absolutely love a nice cold glass of ice water, particularly with 2 wedges worth of lemon juice squeezed in it.  MMmmmmmmmm.  When in rehearsals or gigs, I like to drink a liter or 2 of water.  I like beer as much as the next guy, probably more so. However when at a gig, I usually don't have more than 2, 1 before I play, one during the first set.  I make sure I stay alert and don't become the drunk guy just bashing!!   Now after the gig is over, well, that's another story altogether!

During marching band camp I drink more almost two gallons in a day.  As for drumset gigs I drunk Sobe Energy drinks.  Not that Addrenaline Rush stuff.  I tried it once, I was wired for about an hour, then I was so drained I felt like I hadn't slept in three days.
The Sobe Energy has water, ginseng and guarana.  And I think it was another natural energy giving herb or two.  Also, it tastes like a slightly watered down fuzzy navel. LOL

I played a big show on Sunday in Ocean Groove NJ, I asked the stage hand guy to get me 6 water bottles and he thought I was joking, I explained to him how water keeps me going not only because of obvious playing but because the lights were frying me and being that I was going to be on stage for abut 3 1/2 hours the water was going to be essential.  I ended up drinking all the water about 3 quarters of the way through the night, to the stage hands credit he realized how quickly I was going through the bottles and passed me two more before the end of the night.

like a few have mentioned.  Hydrate  before the session.  i'm no biologist but from stuff i've picked up here and there.  every chemical reaction within the body requires an oxidant which the best source of is H2O.  hence the oxygen molecule.  hehehe.  great stuff for the mind and body...    stay away from the sports drinks.   h2O is the best and cheapest source for oxidants.  remember what The Waterboy said.

The signs of dehydration are:

  • Low urine output
  • Concentrated, dark urine
  • Dry, flushed skin
  • Sunken eyes
  • Dry mouth
  • Furred tongue
  • Confusion and irritability
Any person with all these signs is seriously in need of water.[/b]

With that last symptom, seems like Felix is in a perpetual state of dehydration.  Kiss

No wait ... that's me I'm talking about. LOL

In regards to headaches, I don't know about that. Perhaps it is a symptom, but I've never heard of it being the first.

There is a ton of great advice on this post, perhaps I can add one more point. I'm a cyclist as well as a drummer and also drink a ton of water.  Keep this in mind: drinking excess water throughout the day can also flush out your electrolytes. If you've drank a gallon or more of water throughout the day and are looking at a late-night heavy-hitting gig, a sports drink would probably be a good idea.

If you've drank a gallon or more of water throughout the day and are looking at a late-night heavy-hitting gig, a sports drink would probably be a good idea.  

And you won't find a sports drink at a sports bar ... or perhaps that's why so many people drink beer on the gig?  Grin  Man, I wish they would be consistent with the terminology.

kidney stone

I've got one now, you don't EVER want one.  I'm back to drinking like 3 quarts of water a day to pass the intruder.  Can't wait for THAT to happen.

Hey pops (edit - sorry, misread orig. poster Roll Eyes ) - I've heard that drinking a buttload of Apple Cider Vinegar (or anything acidic like that in large quantities) can help dissolve kidney stones.  Have you tried adding that as well as all that water?

I think that's true, it creates an environment in which the stones don't like to be.  I've been recommended to drink Cranberry juice, but it's SO acidic, it gives me heartburn, so I opted to go to GNC and get a bottle of Cranberry capsules.  Don't seem to hit as hard with the heartburn.

This is a matter of personal body chemistry and diet.  I had one years ago and got in the habit of drinking a lot of water every day.  Since I started tele-commuting from home, it interrupted my normal routine, which caused me to drink less water.  Then came the return of the stone !

On any gig I tend to dehydrate very quickly, and I mean water is pouring out of every hole in my body, you can literally wring the water out of my clothes, therefor I always have a few (5) liters of water next to me. When the gig is over, the bottles are always empty.
