I suppose it's a matter of personal body chemistry.  I used to have to bring a gym bag of tee shirts with me, so I could change at the end of each set (the tee shirt being virtually soaking wet), and at the end of the night after loading the equipment.  Our bass player was the same way.  However, our guitar player and keyboardist rarely broke a sweat, even after moving equipment.

I figure I get mine from heredity.  I remember working on my car with my father when I was a teen, and when he'd be leaning over the engine on a hot summer's night, he would be sweating so much, drops of perspiration would be dropping off of his nose onto the engine.

I'd like to see that guy drink a cup of ....

Oh. NOW I get it - you were responding to a previous post.   Embarrassed

I just thought you came up with that statement out of the blue, and I was - er - marveling at how your mind works!

Okay, back to talking about drums....

I just found out most of the recordings I'm on were actually played by Bernard Purdie.

water sucks! I like to go through a four hour set banging the hell out of my drums and then drink a cup of piss with a couple tablespoons of salt in it, and I feel great. anybody who sells you all that water is good for you crap don't know nothing.
BTW, that was HappyJourneys ONE post.  Glad he took so much time to put it so eloquently!

Water is great. I am a sufferer of migrane headaches. I had a friend tell me about drinking your weight in oz.'s everyday. Not only have the headaches disappeared, but I am losing weight too (which I need)!
I like to have the occasional beer too when I am out playing in a club, but I always drink more water than beer. When I am out doing concerts, I never have any alcohol. There is too much to lose playing on that level to worry about if you have complete control senses or not.
but back to water- I'm a firm believer that the benefits far out weigh the amount times you have to go to the bathroom!!

Happy Drumming!!

In my not-so-old age I've become a water convert.

I usually down a bottle on the way to the gig/rehearsal, and another two or so while playing.

After a long night, I've noticed that I feel a lot better the day after, and bounce back quicker than I would have if I had stuck to my old ways of ice tea, etc..

I learned a good one from my GF, when we hit the theme park worlds..she'll freeze a six pack of bottles the night before, and we'll drink them during the day as they melt.

Started doing the same thing the day before an all nighter gig. Makes them ice cold as they melt during the night.

Sort of obvious, but then, I'm sometimes a slow learner...

True, water is good for the system, but oo much can be harmful.  The recommended amount of water to drink is about a gallon a day, (give or take based on your size).  Too much or too little can lead to Paul's dreaded Kidney Stones (which could be the most painful thing on earth, except for childbirth, which , thanks to biology, I'll never have to worry about Smiley

Of course, if you are going to play and sweat your butt off, more water is necessary.  Things to avoid, even though they have lots of water are coffee, tea (iced and hot), coke (in the South, Coke is all pop, soft drinks, whatever your native dialect is.  As in:

Waffle House waitress:  "Wha'cha want to drink, sweetie?"

ME: "How about a Coke?"

WHW: "sure, sugar, what kind?

ME: (With a tone of disbelief) "Um, is this a trick question?"

Of course, I was 18, from NYC and driving through the Deep South on my way to a college in Mobile, Alabama, which was kind enough to give me a lot of $ to go there.  Talk about your culture shock.

OK, enough tangent.............Drink milk, I mean water, it's good for you.

The techniques, though they play an important role in the early stage, should not be too restrictive, complex or mechanical. If we cling to them, we will become bound by their limitation.  Any technique, however worthy and desirable, becomes a disease when the mind is obsessed with it.

While we are on the topic of healthy and unhealthy things, check out the following:

Subject: Warning -- Dihydrogen Oxide !

Dihydrogen Oxide (DHO) is colourless, odourless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people each year.  Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHO, but the dangers of Dihydrogen Oxide
do not end there.

Prolonged exposure to it's solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte
imbalance.

Not only is DHO dangerous to humans it is also extremely hazardous to the environment.  It is a major component of acid rain, it contributes to the greenhouse effect, and is a common cause of erosion of our natural
landscape.

Worldwide contamination by DHO is reaching epidemic proportions.  Quantities of the chemical have been found in almost every stream, lake and reservoir in Australia today.  But the pollution is global, and the
contaminant has even been found in the Antarctic.  So far governments and environmental watchdogs have been indifferent to the problem.

Despite the danger DHO is widely used as an industrial solvent and coolant in nuclear power stations, as a fire retardant, as an additive in certain junk foods and other food products, and in a wide variety of other uses.  Companies routinely dump DHO into rivers and oceans, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal.

The Australian government (In fact no government) has refused to ban the production, distribution or use of this damaging chemical due to its 'importance to the economic life of the nation'.

In fact the U.S. Navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHO, and designing multi-billion-dollar devices to control and use it during warfare situations.  Hundreds of military
research facilities receive tons of it through a highly complicated underground distribution network.  Many store huge quantities for later use.

Act now to prevent further contamination.  Find out more about this dangerous chemical.

I hope you all have a good sense of humor!  Tongue
