Recently, i saw a custom built 28x20 bass, and holy freak!  

i literally felt like Alice in Wonderland after taking "Drink Me".  seemed more like a massive inner tube than a musical instrument.  slammin' on the Tama IC Power Glide pedal w/ wood beater they had setup made it sound like explosions than bass beats.  my hair was literally flapping in the wind.  

i remember reading how Abe Laboriel Jr. uses a DW 28x20, and watching my Paul McCartney DVD, not thinking much of it.  then again, he's a HUGE guy himself.  but seeing one in person is literally a humbling experience.

at any rate, just curious as to anyone using a similar monstrosity?

The biggest I ever went was 18 x 26

The big ones are just too boomy and clunky for the real world.

If I was a rockstar I would consider such insane sizes for theatrics

I used a kit from 1981 to 1986 made for me by Lewis Music in Jarrow NE England that had two 24x24 bass drums, not big heads I know, but quite deep for the time.

I was playing at a bar and the room acoustice fit perfectly with my huge 40" kick and I had this great groove going on the bass and cowbell.  Everyone was oohing and awing and then when the guiar player came in loud and strong, thats when I WOKE UP.  Talk about a letdown of a dream.
