I'm starting to get into electronic music more and more lately, but I'm still sort of illiterate when it comes to this stuff.
I have a trapKAT 3.1 that I use with an Alesis D4 brain, but people keep telling me that I need to use a sequencer.

Can anyone suggest some books where I could learn more about sequencers or maybe some suggestions of decent entry level sequencers?

Adam,

What is it that you want to do with your electronics?  Not everything requires a sequencer.

Right now, I just want to use is as a drum brain.  I'm also open to using them for other applications, but I just don't exactly know what they do.

I just bought my TrapKat used (2.0) last fall. At the time, I was using the D4 for my sound module as well. Not doing anything more than just playing electronic drums instead of acoustic. The D4's a good unit, however I was wanting to play with a wider variety of sounds for the TrapKat, over the DK-10 I had been using. Due to catching it for a good price, I upgraded to a Roland XV-3080 synthesizer and used it through the winter, however I got frustrated with it, because it's a quite a bit harder to cusomize sounds on that a dedicated drum unit. Tremendous amount of sounds, but more for a studio person than a middle aged drummer such as myself.

I'd been moaning about it for a while in a couple different forums, and I finally had enough of it and snagged a used Roland TD-10 off of eBay. I've had that unit for 3 or 4 weeks now, and I'm very pleased with it's ease of use, and sound quality. And it works beatifully with the TrapKat!. If you need to watch the budget, I imagine the TD-8 would be a good choice as well. Both units have some sequencing capabilities from what I see in their product overviews, but I've never used that feature so I'll reserve comment for someone more familiar with those features.

a sequencer is a way to digitally record midi instruments.  the thing is, it doesnt record the audio, it records data, the on and off and velocity information.  so if you ran a midi cable from the D4 to a sequencer you would have a series of on/off's recorded, to play back what youve recorded youd need to run the sequencer back to the brain, it then sends the recorded on/off data back to the brain and triggers it to play in the pattern you recorded.  got it  Grin

id say start simple.  use your computer.  if you have a joystick port you can get a simple cable that uses that port for midi in and out.  then hit up the shareware music machine for a free/demo/shareware sequencer.  thatll give you an idea of how it all works.  and if you should bother with a hardware sequencer.
