The Warming-up the Body process I describe in my 5-Minute Lessons is just one of the ways I warm-up.

What do you do to warm-up your body before you start playing or even before you pick-up a pair of sticks?

Sadly, I rarely warm up before going on stage.

My pratice routine includes a little bit of a warm up drill though.

Before i pick up sticks? nothing, I usually do a slow 3 minute warm up (q min singles, doubles, paradiddles) then stretch (like it suggests on www.vater.com) my forearms and fingers, then practice. Same for my feet, I do singles, doubles, paradiddles, for 1 min each, then stretch and actually I jump 80 times using only (well mainly) my feet, letting the whole foot touch the ground each time, this is my method of trying to strenghen my ankles, I used to box, so skipping sometimes gets done also... then double kick practice.

i'm into the whole-body stretch. ideally, i do a combo of yoga/ballet leg, back and arm stretches an hour before the gig, and also do some brisk 5-minute aerobic-type thing 10 minutes before going on, to get the blood moving. i also like to lean over, drop my head and dangle my arms freely, to relax and get more blood into the head.

does it seem like i don't have much blood circulation going on?

Before I practise on my kit, I will do a few minutes on my chin-up bar to excerise and stretch my arm muscles. I would reccomend chin up bars as they have realy helped to develope my arm muscles and my friend almost knocked himself out on it whilst entering my room! Embarrassed Grin

When I am playing elsewhere I usally just do a few stretches and rudiments to warm up my hands.

I have a few Physical Therapy major friends at my college, and I've had quite a few discussions about this topic.  For my legs, I do a lot of exercises that bicyclists use (not sure the names, but they work!).  For my arms, I do the flexor/extender muscles (much like on Vater.com), rudis and yada yada.  What I HAVE noticed in a lot of drummers is that they worry about their arms and legs, and that's it.  A drummer's shoulders, chest, and back are JUST as important as the arms and legs - especially for drummers with larger kits.  

And don't forget - crunches are a drummer's best friend.

Like smog, I usually do about 10-15 minutes of yoga based stretching before I play.  Work the back and legs mostly, sine they seem to be the most affected areas at the end of the night.
