-I'm going "back to basics" with my hands, and working on my left hand.  I realised that when I play, my left hand always does some things slightly differently.  It even holds a stick very very slightly differently from my right hand (apparently my teacher didn't notice).  So I'm slowing everything back down and trying to improve my left hand.

-moeller technique, double bounces, all on practice pad.

-doing the heel-toe bass drum thing!!

-trying to figure out how to make my trading 4s better.

yeah I'm in the same boat

doing well with " the encyclopedia of dbl bass drumming"

rudiments with the feet

then back to doug tann's "the forgotten foot"

I would like to revisit Kim Plainfield's "Advanced Techniques" and a when I get my new kit I'm going to start chunking away at "new breed"

I'm trying to get up to 2 hours a day again of PRACTICE.  It's tough.

I'm working on playing a Cascara on the ride cymbal (right hand) over a samba with the bd and hh. My goal is to be able to play accents on other surfaces (snare mostly) with my left hand.

So far I can play it well at slower tempos. Time to kick it up! Wooooo!

Put some old Santana in the background and you can really rock out!

I'm working on determining the ideal positioning of my kit.  I can never seem to get it exactly where I want it.  I'm experimenting with different angles and heights of every stand, drum, cymbal and throne.  A couple of days ago I was practicing to Santana's Moonflower.

A Sammy Nestico/Basie chart called "Pressure Cooker" for my big band.  It has a lot of four bar drum breaks, separated by two bars of horn riffs. Problem is, the whole sequence comes out to 14 bars when 16 would have a more natural feel. Then I come out of an 8 bar solo right into a horn/rhythm figure from hell before the ending.  Did I mention that the tempo is supposed to be 160 in cut time ?

Just FYI ... I've got all the drum charts for the Nestico arrangements ... and I've posted them in the VIP Room.  Smiley

I'm sure you already have the chart for this tune ... but just thought I'd mention it in case you are interested in further study or if your band does more tunes from the Basie Straight Ahead album.

The chart cover states that Pressure Cooker was on the Dark Orchid album, which I can't find listed anywhere.  If it is on the Straight Ahead album, I can get that.  We are about 3/4 of the way to full tempo. Personally, I think it swings better at  about 135. We do a number of Nestico's charts.

Roger ... my bad! I've played that tune and assumed it was off the Straight Ahead album ... and I was WRONG! I got to think about it, realized my mistake, and confirmed that I was wrong by viewing the charts I do have. Sorry.  Sad

I had the priviledge of having a private lesson with Michael Lauren (teacher at Drummers Collective in N.Y.) and he taught me all about finger technique, so now I'm concentrating only on that and my single-pedal technique!

I'm working on a Jeff Beck tune which I have about sewn up...it's pretty free, you just have to keep counting, so I'm basically improvising in odd times.  But it's not really tough.  The thing about our stuff is I have to play so many fills and styles the challenge is to not overplay and not play the same thing with the same hand etc.  That's the hard part, doing it for two hours and keeping it fresh.

The cover stuff I do is pretty much all auto pilot stuff.  I just have to smile, work on my posture, try to incorporate my left as much as I'm comfortable with and keep that big beat happening.

I look forward to learning some hip patterns...time time time- never enough

Still working on Future Sounds David Garibaldi after a brief pause.
Started on Bonham triplets, starting with left hand instead of the right. I have always lead with the right hand. Am working on going from snare to floor tom in an infinity motion (sideways eight).
Bass (right )=B
Snare (left then right)=S
Floor (right then left)=F
BSSBFFBSSBFF

As the speed increases the triplet feel is harder to maintain.

I'm also working on a cool shuffle beat, but I can't divulge this as it will probably go on the first album and its got to be fresh!;D

Ive been working on "Hurts so Bad" by Susan Tedeschi.  Im really having problems with this particular tune.  The drums parts right before the breaks are killing me.  Any help would be appreciated.  I wish i could find some tabulature for this song.  Do any of you guys have an idea what Tom Hambridge is doing here?

Thanks

Are you playing the beat 6/8 with varied 1/4 and 8th note fills?

see if this exercise helps:

switch back and forth from patterns similar to:

1 2 3 4 5 6    and  1 2 3 4 5 6
s        s                           S
    b b    b b            B    B

to:
going down the toms doubletime: (RLRLRLRLRLRL)

1and2and3and4and5and6and

and all the numerous variations of this, like:
1and 2and 3and 4  5  6

      and:

1 2 3 4 5and  6and

and:
1 2 3 4TT 5TT6TT (triplet variations, etc.)

to help you get the groove.

You're welcome.
I'm a big 6/8 fan.   I used to be in a band that played a lot of 6/8  tunes, like "Earth Angel", "Oh Donna", "Sea of Love", "Stormy Monday", "Texas Flood", "Rocky Mountain Way" , "Bad to the Bone", "Dazed and Confused", "Red House", Journey's "Lights", etc. It was like one big 6/8 medley!

Most, if not all of those songs are 12/8. I know; I'm splitting hairs.
