Most, if not all of those songs are 12/8. I know; I'm splitting hairs.

The songs above can also be counted in the compound duple meter of 6/8.

I'm returning to basics. I've been playing for 11yrs. and it feels like that time again. It seems like every few years I strip all my playing down and fine tune all my technique from the bottom up. My hands feel fantastic though, and I'm playing with more fluidity and control than ever. I 'm having a hard time playing anything especially fast or chop-demanding but usually when I stip my technique it's only a temporary problem. The body has to adjust to the recalibration. It's like doing a tune-up

Actually, most of those songs are in 4/4. The cymbal might be swung, but the basic meter is as 4/4 as you can get.

Currectly, I'm working on my double bass chops on my homemade double bass drum pad.

Also, I'm working on my hand technique, both traditional, and matched. I'm adopting the mouler stroke in both my traditional and matched.

Finally, I've gone back to the basics of timing (which isn't really the basics). I'm playing along with a bunch of play-a-long CD's that give me 4, 8, and 16 bar breaks in the middle of a bass riff where I have to keep perfect tempo until the bass player comes back in. Tricky stuff, but i'm getting used to it.

I have also been working on my double bass drum techniques with a home double pedal pad I made.
I will post some pictures when I get the digicam back.

here's my practice routine

singles:

RLRL RLRL RLRL RLRL :

R L R L R L R L   R L R L  R L R L :

Doubles: heel/toe technique

RR LL RR LL

Triplets:  between both feet

Triplets: Heel/Pad/Toe technique

I continue my practice on my double bass technique. It's probably my biggest weak spot right now.

Also working on WASABI by Akira Jimbo... trying to figure out what he's doing in the hopes that I can take some of it, modify it and make my own. I'm always experimenting with triggers, too, so he's a bit of a hero for me.

One thing that caught my eye was keeping a bass drum rhythm while playing a syncopated hi-hat... all with the feet!! I hope to fit that in with my double bass practice to keep the feet healthy.

We got the Akira Jimbo WASABI DVD in yesterday at GC Hollywood and it's driving me nutz!

PS - HI, DrummerMom!!  Grin

And, of course, the compound duple meter 12/8, which is often more accurate as there's a 4/4 feel going on as opposed to a 2/4 feel. Still, my point is strictly academic. If you instructed a drummer to play either 6/8 or 12/8 under these songs, he'd play the same thing.

No.
Most of these songs are 12/8. Maybe Rocky Mountain Way is a 4/4 shuffle, but Stormy Monday, a slow blues, like all other twelve bar slow blueses is in 12/8. On all of them, you may count 4/4 (and so might I), but the convention is 12/8.

Joe Morello has me working on pg. 6 in Sitck Control but playing each exercise in 5 over 2, a pg. towards the back of Accents and Rebounds (don't have the book in front of me, sorry)  in 9/8 that consists of 5 and 7 stroke roll variations with accents, but he wants me to play the rolls as open, closed and as single strokes. A specific ostinato out of his book against several exercises in Reed's Sycopation. I will play the ositanto on each hand while moving around the kit with what is written in the exercise. I usually play 16ths, triplets or quintuplets on the kick under the ostinato.  Several pages out of Sync. for dbl bass. I play the exercise in cut time while laying a  straight groove on top. Pg. 8 in Joe's book but play each exercise in 3/4 (the exercises are written in 4/4) to give it an over the bar feel. The endurance page in his book where you go from playing singles in groupings of 4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11 and 12. And a review of the first six exercises of Cirone's concert snare drum book. I really wanted to get my crossticking going so Joe had me pickup Joe Cursatis' book, so I am also working out of that book.

I'm working with a teacher who studied with Chaffee and Chester. He has me working with the Chaffee "Patterns" books and "The New Breed" by Chester.

Also transcribing various fills from CDs I like (working on Vinnie Colaiuta now...ouch!), as well as rudiments.

Felix, I wish I was getting deadly. I still feel I'm scratching the surface, but I'm having a lot of fun doing it. I would love to sit and work with Bart and Mr. Acrolite. Maybe get some insight and tips from them. There is soooooo much to learn.

Mr. Drums, I see Joe about every five weeks for a lesson so I really have no trouble covering the material. I usually practice seven days a week. I split the lesson into the hand exercises and the kit exercises. I work the hand exercises five days per week and the kit exercises three days per week. Unfortunately because of my day gig my practice time is limited. Some days I do not get to cover all of the hand exercises so I make sure I get to them the next day. No biggie. It took me a while to get into this routine but it is working and Joe seems to be happy with my progress.
