Some guys on another drum forum have taken a shot at it, but I don't necessarily think they got it right. Here's a thread where they discuss it.

I love turning on the die-hard Peart or Portnoy fans to Deen's playing - it kinda lets them know that those two aren't the only drummers who play big kits out there who are worth checking out...

After further listening, there is only one hat note. It's on the 5th 32nd note. The 6th is a ghost note on the snare.

I've been thinking that, too. Everybody seems to hear hihat on the 5th and 6th, while I'm kind hearing hihat on the 4th and 5th note. Who knows? Have you checked out the Porcaro lick at the top of that page? That's another lick that's just ridiculous, and very hard to transcribe!

Like Keith might remember, I submitted the lick a few months ago to our national percussion magazine (the Slagwerkkrant), they transcribed it like this: Ofcourse, I think the first note should be a flam

Not yet, my heads going to explode from this one. I think (emphasis on the think) that I have it. There are some serious mixed stickings in there to pull the feel off correctly. I'm going to try and get what I think they are in type and you guys can have a look and tell me if I'm crazy or not. Carn, thanks for posting that. I agree with all but note 12 and the sticking.

If you've ever seen Colaiuta on the Buddy Rich Memorial video where he plays with Gadd and Weckl, you've seen this type of lick in about 15 billion variations. I don't know if you could ever come up with a totally accurate of this version, however ... the drums are recorded so big (made me think of late 80s metal), and grace notes and hi-hat are sort of lost in the mix.

Please excuse the text, I don't have a notation package. The two lines don't line up visually because of the different letters involved. There are a total of 25, 32nd notes in the fill.
Notice the 11th note is played on both the snare drum and floor tom, notated by a B.
(Sticking) R l r r L r l l K K B l r l r r L L K K R R K K L
(Instruments) S s s s T s s s K K B s s s s s H H K K F F K K S
B = Both Hands, Snare Drum + Floor Tom played together F = Floor Tom (accent) H = Hi Tom (accent) K = Kick S = Snare (accent) s = Snare (ghost) T = Hi-hat
I slowed it down and really listened closely to it. The mixed sticking is what I think he is doing because it makes the most sense in respect to the feel and what instruments he's playing.
This is such a wicked fill. It's fast becoming my favorite of all time.
Thanks to Mr. A for bringing it out of obscurity.

Wow, thanks a lot! It's almost... just quads. But not quite! (I hear the hi-hat on the 4th note) I love this quote from the other forum: Roy, cheers for posting a link to that guys 'drum licks from hell' site. Wow, what a nutter!! He's got too much time on his hands, great for us though! Nice one LMAO!! Thanks Mr A!!
