I am afraid this might be an Odd question..but here goes....There is a piece of music I would like to have one of my concert bands rehearse/perform however, one of the instruments called for in the piece is a METAL garbage can cover. Well, I do not own one of these and was wondering if someone could offer an alternative that would produce the same effect when struck.  OR.....an idea of where I might obtain a metal garbage can cover?  Thank you for your suggestions and have a WONDERFUL day.   Smiley

You could do some sort of stack cymbal set. Get two cymbals and mount them together. Thats a very trashy, white noise effect sound without much sustain.

There may be an advantage playing the trash cans.  Close your eyes and imagine this.  "Honey, I am going to the music store to buy me a new--WHACK-SMACK-BAMMMM!"  It would be much safer to say, "Honey, I am going to the hardware store to buy new garbage cans".

I don't know if I would substitute a cymbal or anything else for the trash can lid.  IMHO, there is just something to be said for using common everyday items for effects.  When I was in high school, I used old telephone bells suspended from neckchains on my set. When I'd hit them, they'd swing back and forth; I had to dodge 'em sometimes!  I had regular cowbells and temple blocks, but I used a brass cauldron lid about 6" in diameter as a sort of Zil-Bel type of effect.  I have always loved the sets that had eclectic junk mixed in with run-of-the-mill retail drum stuff.  It gives your music a sort of down-to-earth feel.

Of course, if you can't see the item being played, it wouldn't matter anyway! Grin

yeah, i just cant understand why you would want to replace the item thats called for with something more expensive and not whats called for.

A few years back, I used an old fashoined washing machine lid. I guess it's like a 1930's model; I'm into vintage stuff...
Anyway, the advantage is that it's round and profiled like a cymbal, fits in the cymbal bag, has a center hole, but still sounds like a garbage can lid.
