First Class All the Way... Drummer Cafe!

« on: September 02, 2003, 10:58 AM »

As some of you may know, a while ago the singer in my band was not very good. We told him he this and after a lot of umm-ing and ahh-ing he decided to leave the band.
So now we need to go through auditions of mates and unknowns to find who has the best blend of chemistry with the band and musical talent. But how should we go about the audition process? I have a few ideas below, but I'm not sure how good they are:

1) Play a cover of a song and get the guy/girl to sing along (Judges the general talent of the singer)

2) Ask the guy to bring along his own lyrics, and a melody that he has made and ask him to sing it (Judges the guys individual musical creativity)

3) Send the guy a recording of our original music a week or 2 in advance, allowing him time to create at least a vocal melody for the song, or preferably lyrics as well. (Judges compatibility with the band)

These are my ideas, but as you can probably tell I am not sure which is the best way to go about auditioning singers.

Thanks for any help

Will

(ps any other auditioning methods suggested are more than welcome Smiley)

It's been a while since I've audtioned singers, but here are a few things in no particular order:

When arranging the audition, lock in on a few covers the person will sing with your band.  You noted this and I think it is a great idea.

Have him bring any recordings of himself singing.

Be sure to play him some of YOUR original stuff--either live or on tape, so HE has a chance to hear it.  Remember HE is audtioning YOU as well.

Be sure that if you are looking for a certain Look or Age (I know that sounds trivial), the person fit the bill.  (Don't ask, but I have experience here!)

Be sure he is on the same page with you guys on how often he wants to play, how much money he expects to make, etc.

I'm sure you'll think of other stuff too.

Good luck!

To add to the above list:

--DON'T make a commitment then and there. Make sure they know up front that you need to sleep on any decision and you'll get back to them later. That also gives them the chance to back out if what you're doing is not what they want to do.

--Let them know that you're listening to other talent and you'll let them know your decision on a specific day in a specific way (such as e-mail or phone).

First make your ad as specific and to the point as you can.  Don't just say band looking for killer singer.  Explain exactly what you're looking for in a singer.  List details.

When they call, ask them about their goals, musical preferences, age, type of voice, experience, etc.  Also tell him/her yours.  If everything sounds good on this level ask the person to send you a tape or CD of them singing.  It can be anything, cover or original.

If the recording impresses the band enough then call him/her back and tell them you liked what you heard.  Send him/her an original or 2 or 3, without vocals and ask them to write their part.  Have them call you when they are ready.  You can then audition the person.  How long they take to get ready will be very telling.  For a cover band just have the person learn some covers.

If the audition impresses the band you can go from there and I wouldn't hesitate to offer the position if the candidate sufficiently blew the band away.  If the person was terrible thank them for coming down and tell them you will call them if you decide to make an offer but you have other auditions before you can make a decision.

That is pretty much how I would do it and have done it.

Yeah and I add to that...make sure the rascal knows up front he or she is going to be schleping equipment with the rest of the band! No walking in 5 minutes before the gig starts and leaving after the last song is played!  Grin They can roll up mic cords and carry PA gear with everyone else!

My band is auditioning singers right now too. I hate the whole process. It feels so dirty!

We're requiring mp3's of audio samples via email. We are posting our own audio samples for download so they can prepare a lyric or melody. Lastly, we just sit down with them and chat for about an hour to get to know them a bit. We feel that we're not just interviewing the folks to be creative band members, but (this feels as cheesy as it sounds) we're auditioning to be friends too. We are careful not to approach it like we are auditioning you, but you are testing us as well.
