What is that little dot on the bass drum head for? It's that thing that looks liks a target for the beater. Mine fell off and I have no clue if I need to get a new one or if it's just decoration anyway.

The main reason it is there is to prevent wear on the bass drum head.  Different patches will also give you a different bass drum sound.  It also provides some muffling.  We had a long discussion about this in the past.  Do a search for bass drum patches.

Try a search under Falam and you might find something. I tried bass drum patches and got nada.

When you buy the bass drum head, a single patch is usually included. You can stick it on wherever you like, based on the length of your beater.

Attach the pedal with the beater on and put the patch where the beater hits.

You'll need to buy a double patch for your double bass pedal. These usually run about $7. I use the Double Kick Pad by Aquarian.

There are others (rectangle-shaped) that have metal in them. I don't like these, as they affect my sound too much and I tend to kick hard enough to break them open.

LOUIS: Thanks for the link. As a relatively new guy, I sometimes miss out on those earlier topics.

I use a leather one on the old Gretsch kit but nothing on the TAMA Starclassic Maples.

I used a thin black cordura Evans patch when I use my wood beaters more frequently.  They added a little life but didnt really change the sound at all.  Now that I use felt beaters more, I dont bother.  I dont play hard.
