Hey guys i am new to drumming and i am trying to decide if this is a good setup, I am looking at musicians friends web site and i am almost decided on the new sonor 3001 for 599.99 or the Pearl export select blemished set for 665.99 , I have asked several people  and its a 50 /50 toss up everyone says there about equal but i figured you guys would know best,on the cymbals i am looking at the sabian xs20 performance set or the zildjian zxt rock box set , I guess the first question is ,are these sets ok for a starter set or should i be looking in another direction?  Huh

I've never heard amybody say anything bad about that Sonor line, so that's probably a safe bet - the price is certainly excellent. Exports are pretty good, but a blem kit for more money doesn't make sense.

Sabian's student lines of cymbals are excellent, but I've heard a lot of negative comments about Zildjian's student lines.

So, if you're looking for an oversimplified answer, get the Sonors and the Sabians. Or look into a good used kit on Ebay.

heres some advice from one newbie to another, dont buy a boxed set. go into the store and mix and match, you can still go with the Xs20's but decide exactly which crash, ride, etc.. fits you best. I bought a set and I wish I hadnt.

With kits like the Force 3001, Fusion refers to the diameter of the drums.  A "fusion" kit typically has toms with 10'', 12", and 14" diameter toms, a 20" bass drum, and a 14" snare. The regular kit tends to have 12", 13", and 16" toms, a 22" bass drum, and a 14" snare. The depths vary by brand.

They have a Pearl Export Select Fusion kit for $699 on musicians friend, but only in Autumn Fade and Cobalt Mist. Its about $170 off the normal Export Selects.

I think the SABIAN Xs20 cymbals will be perfect for you. I am currently using them and I am impressed with the crash cymbal. I have a 16" Medium thin Crash. I am planning on getting new hats and a new ride soon. I still have my old solar ride and hats. I  think I'm going for the Xs20 Rock hats, and the Rock Ride.

SONOR. I had a set back inthe 80's and they are without a doubt one of the best built and engineered drums in the world. Not to mention one of the oldest drum companies, if not the oldest around. As far as cymbals go, i'm a Paiste 2002 guy. They are incredibly consistant and quite durable, unfortunatly also expensive. But remember, in most cases, you get what you pay for.

Another subtle difference between fusion and stage sets is that the fusion has a stand mounted large tom (14") while the stage set has a floor tom (16").

Just FYI.

I think you will be pleased with either set.  My personal taste leans toward the Sonors.

My favorite kit by far is my Sonors.  I have a (high end) maple Designer kit which is (many) times more expensive than the kits you are looking at, but I am right now working on a project involving modifying a kit, and I looked at everything around the price point you are looking at (and on up to more than twice that) and I still chose a Sonor kit similar to what you are considering.

Although the sound was not an issue, they did sound better than pretty much anything near in price, but what I was more interested in was quality, construction, hardware, etc.  No contest.  The drums come from a pedigree that shows through.  They look and feel like their much more expensive relatives.

So another vote for the Sonors.  Add a few decent cymbals and keep good heads on them and you will have a set that others may envy when they see and hear it.
