Someone recently contacted me asking about wrapping mallets ... so I thought I would start a thread on the topic.

Do you or have you wrapped your own mallets?

This can be anything from yarn to cord; marimba to vibe mallets. We could also include felt timpani mallets as well as latex wrapped mallets.

I can remember doing a lot of this mallet wrapping back when I was in college, but nowadays I have little time to mess with it. The latest thing I've down was to wrap a kick pedal beater so that I could use it on my djembe; mounting the drum horizontally so that it could be played with a pedal. I've been experimenting with various materials, trying to get the same sound that I get when I use my bare hand on the drum. So far, it's just not warm enough, even when using a very wide surface area of contact.

Bart, try using leather.  A soft leather wrapped around a harder, yet still somewhat soft flat core.  I think that in order to acheive that sound, you'll need a large ovular shape to the beater.  Another thing that might be easier is to take that cowbell beater that you can buy.  I think it is made by Regal.  It's a normal beater, but instead of a mallet, it is a wooden stick at the end, with a rubber contact point.  You might be able to wrap that with some medium weight soft leather.  I would think that leather will be the best way to acheive that sound.  Or maybe something a bit softer, like goat skin.

As for wrapping mallets, I used to do quite a bit of it in college.  I wrapped marimba mallets, made combo sticks that had a felt tip on one end of the regular drum stick, timpani mallets once, but with normal cheap VicFirth replacement felt.

I KNEW someone was going to say that. I stopped myself from going into detail of what I have been trying, but I guess I shouldn't have.

I've already tried the Regal thing, in fact, talked to Regal about it at their booth for PASIC in Nashville.

I need to find a VERY soft goatskin to try. Actually the next thing on my list is to try a shammy, like what you use to wipe your care down after you wash it. The other trick is getting the area of impact to be the size of your hand. I need more surface area striking the drum.

I've been meaning to learn to wrap my own timpani mallets, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.  For those of you who are interested in learning how to do this, I own book you'll want to read.  It's "Mallet Repair" by Arthur Press.  I teaches you how to wrap felt (timpani) mallets and yarn and cord (marimba and vibe) mallets.

Hey Bart -- have you resolved this issue yet?  I'd love to know if you've found something that works.  I have been toying with the same idea for a while as well.

Where did James Walker run off to?   I bet he would have some great advice re wrapping mallets and creating Djembe beaters.

I'm still around...just haven't had much to contribute recently.

I've wrapped my own mallets before (vibraphone, marimba, timpani, orchestral bass drum), but I have no clue what would work for a "djembe pedal" beater...

I wrapped my own mallets a little while ago, not very well mind, but it was my first go, and it was just a thrown together thing, but next time I will do it with more care, and take more time on doing it. They worked ok though...so thats all that matters I guess!
