hey guys,

thx for the great percussion info from my djembe tuning post.  but i thought this one would warrant a post all its own.

how would i properly mic a djembe with one mic?  also, how would we do a pair of congas with one mic?  kinda on a budget.  Wink

we've tried some experimenting, but just wanna again know the tried and true methods that you guys use.

Hollow a log into a drum.
It's the space inside that makes the sound.

If you only have one mike, the centered position between the two congas is fine.  For better overall quality I have always prefered one mike for each drum.  This allows for the Quinto (high pitched) to have a bit more high end placed on it then the other lower pitched conga that you might want a bit more bottom end on.  It makes for easier  e.q. of the head differences.   Most important,  don't cheap out on bad mikes !!!!

Best of luck

consider installing the mic INSIDE the drum... done this on a few dhols and  tablas and it works like a charm.
